Souza seventh in U.S.
Napa star jumps up two spots in final heptathlon standings

EUGENE, Ore. — Napa Track Club sensation Tatum Souza moved up two places in the final day of competition to finish seventh in the women’s heptathlon U.S. Junior Track & Field Outdoor Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
The Napa High School senior finished with 4,641 points in the event where points are given based on times and distances in the 100-meter hurdles, the high jump, the shot put, the 200 meters and the second day’s events the long jump, javelin and the 800-meer run. She entered Sunday in ninth place with with 2,664 points.
UCLA’s Ryann Krais won the event with 5,344 points, followed by Rebecca Neville at 4,879. Iowa State’s Jordan Andreassen was third with 4,762. Wisconsin’s Jessica Flax (4,746), Arkansas’ Leah Orley (4,746) and Colorado’s Brianne Beemer (4,707) finished ahead of Souza.
Souza had of the best efforts in the field in the long jump, going 5.51 meters. She threw the javelin 31.99 meters, then finished the grueling 800 in a time of 2 minutes, 2:24.76 seconds.
The 17-year-old stars in the jumps and the hurdles for Napa High battling a hamstring injury.
“I couldn’t really hurdle very well with it because it hurt really bad,” said Souza.
