Ernest “Paul” Adams

NAPA - Paul Adams went home to the Lord early June 14, 2009, after a courageously fought six-month battle with lymphoma. Paul was born to Ernest Sr. on Sept. 16, 1947, in Napa. Paul’s grandmother, Nina, and his Aunt Faye raised Paul, providing not only love and guidance but a strong work ethic and moral foundation that served him throughout his life.

Paul attended Napa schools, graduating from Napa High School in 1965. Paul as a teen began work with his father in the stables at the Napa Valley Ranch Club. It was during this time that Paul met his future wife, Cheryl (McCarthy). Paul and Cheryl were married Sept. 2, 1967.

After working in several professions, he returned to the Napa Valley Ranch Club, now called R Ranch, 22 years ago. This time, Paul worked as a ranch manager and continued there until his cancer left him too sick to work. It was a place he loved, and it loved him.

Paul was a family man. He was devoted to his cherished wife of nearly 42 years, Cheryl. He was the loving and guiding force of his son, Joe, and daughter Heather (Gene Hankes). Paul was an enthusiastic and caring grandfather to Heather’s six children. His love is planted in our hearts.

Paul passed on the legacy of rodeo, which his father worked at professionally, to his grandson, Brandon. His daughter, Heather, and granddaughter, Alice, have learned the behavior of horses and the skills of riding them.

Paul switched from riding bulls to riding steel horses. Paul loved riding his motorcycle. He was a chapter representative and leader of the Modified Motorcycle Association. He also loved the outdoors, fishing, road trips, working with his hands, restoring classic cars and motorcycles, and Hot August Nights. These things he shared with his son and best friend Joe.

The joy we feel that Paul is with his Lord and savior makes our memories blessed. Thanks for the prayers. They have comforted Paul and his family.

The R Ranch, 1962 Capell Valley Road, will hold a memorial Saturday, July 11, at 2 p.m. Please call 252-0140. The family will entomb Paul at a later date, then have a private ceremony at home.
