Taking addresses at face value

You wrote a column about why the Fifth Street parking garage was named that way, even though it faces Main Street (“Face off,” March 12). Can you tell me why the Safeway that faces Jefferson Street has a Clay Street address and why the Safeway that faces Trancas Street has a Jefferson Street address?

Because we live in a topsy-turvy world, why else?

As some Napans may remember, the old north Napa Safeway store originally faced Jefferson Street. Later, the entire shopping center was remodeled and Safeway turned to face Trancas Street, but for practical purposes retained the same address.

Safeway spokeswoman Espy Greenwood said the Safeway store facing Jefferson Street has the Clay Street address because that was what the post office assigned to it. She added that the post office follows a certain numbering system and the Clay Street address would be the next one available at the time the store was built.

Otherwise, Napa could have ended up with two Safeways, both having a Jefferson Street address.
