War of words

Pat-a Cake Pat-a-Cake
“Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!” The sound of my husband’s deep-voiced yell of shock and surprise pulled me out of my reading reverie. And then he did it again, even longer and louder, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I jumped up from my dining room chair and headed to where my husband was standing in shock staring into the kids’ play area (what for most people is their den).
What is school for?
The other day I was in the middle of a wood working project and I had a problem – how to make a piece of wood completely flat and square with hand tools. I thought: What would Mr. L'Hommedieu say?
Three men among Napa’s boys of summer
What is it about the first break of spring, with the clean crisp smell of a baseball morning, that makes a child’s heart leap with anticipation into another exciting day? What is the catalyst that exists that causes one to wake up with the same childlike enthusiasm each and every summer morning? For me, those days existed in ’60s Napa for consecutive summers thanks to the perseverance, dedication and patience of three men whose love of a then boy’s game combined to provide two memorable years of pure joy.

Overload at the Fed?
The origins of the Federal Reserve System lie in the financial panic of 1907, when the United States averted economic collapse only because J.P. Morgan improvised emergency private-sector loans to troubled Wall Street firms. Washington’s response was to create the Fed as a politically independent “lender of last resort,” with the authority to supervise banks.
Obama’s plan for the financial sector
President Obama boasts that his planned overhaul of the financial regulatory system will mark “transformation on a scale not seen since the reforms that followed the Great Depression.”
Monez clarifies volunteer record
Dear editor, I appreciated Jillian Jones’ thorough and well-balanced June 17 article on the potential 2010 Board of Supervisors race. There was one sentence, however, that might lead readers to a misconception.
Demonstrators infringe on other’s rights
Dear editor, the recent chilling account of a physician’s slaying at his church was a stark reminder of the lengths a fanatical fringe of anti-abortionists will go to prevent women from receiving a medical procedure with which they disagree. The irony, of course, is that often these fanatics claim their actions are religiously sanctioned.
Preserving agriculture in Napa County
Dear editor, we want to express our deepest appreciation to Diane Dillon, Keith Caldwell and Brad Wagenknecht for their vote against the Lake Luciana project in Pope Valley. They upheld the decision that the county planners had made earlier this spring. And essentially this was a vote to follow what had been laid out in the General Plan. If this project passed, there would have been enormous pressure on the rest of agricultural-zoned areas in our county. Our agricultural-based economy would have been in jeopardy, and so would our precious open space.
Making history in Iran
No matter how things turn out in Iran in the immediate future, a huge statement has been made by the Iranian people that they want more freedom, and my belief is that in the future we will see the manifestation of their courageous actions.

Welcome to America - now speak whatever you want
English is the hardest language to learn. It's a tacitly accepted fact that English, with all its rules (and millions of exceptions) is a very difficult language, sometimes to a point where even native English-speakers have considerable trouble.

What politically-themed issue makes you want to scream?
Wagenknecht v. Monez, who would get your vote?
As Jillian Jones stated in her June 17 article, Former Napa Police Chief Dan Monez is considering a run for supervisor next year against Brad Wagenknecht, the slow-growth advocate who has represented District 1 for the last 11 years.
