I'm here to school you on education
Last March the Register held a contest to “Win Your Own Blog.” Of course I entered, I’m opinionated, well informed on some topics, a good bluffer on others. I like the give and take of the online and I am passionate about my beliefs, particularly when it comes to education. I thought that would make a good blog topic. Well, the very capable Ms. Phoebe Harper won. However, Dan Ross e-mailed me a few days later and said he could be persuaded to have a blog about education.
Health care reform can't wait
Congress must act quickly to pass health care reform.
We can't afford the death penalty
There are many reasons people object to the death penalty: The risk of wrongful conviction, bias against people of color and the fact that most other civilized societies have concluded that the death penalty should be abolished.
City doing good work online
Dear editor, Kudos to the city of Napa’s online service center.
Health care that bankrupts us
Dear editor, As I read Kevin Courtney’s Napa Journal on May 31, I marvel that during his battle with prostate cancer he received the best medical care in the world. He admitted his out-of-pocket cost was less than $2,000. He didn’t wait for treatment and he didn’t have the government tell him what care he could or could not have.
Documenting lake and Monticello history
Dear editor, I’m a long-time Napa County rancher, vintner, businessman and a former Napa County Supervisor, and I’ve recently focused my energy on a pet project — to produce a photo-documentary history on the Lake Berryessa area, the former town of Monticello and its families from the 1840s through the 1940s.
Pretty poppies support vets
Dear editor, The Ladies of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113 would like to thank the Napa Valley Register and local stores in the community for participating in our yearly poppy distribution. Without your support, and the support of the generous people of Napa, we would not have had a successful week. All our proceeds benefit the veterans and families of this great community.
Whatever happened to restaurant grades?
Dear editor, I was wondering the other day, what ever happened to the proposal put forward by the former head of the Napa County Department of Environmental Management, Trent Cave, about the signage posting in local restaurants with their letter grade? I suppose the Napa County Board of Supervisors got an earful from those owners who were afraid of the consequences of not being up to speed on their health issues and nixed that idea. I am wondering what the owners are afraid of. If they are in compliance, then there should be no problem, correct?
Lake Luciana vote was a mistake
The vote against the Lake Luciana project today flies in the face of County rules for acceptable uses in the open space area of the agricultural watershed, and was a mistake.
Welcome to America - now speak whatever you want
English is the hardest language to learn. It's a tacitly accepted fact that English, with all its rules (and millions of exceptions) is a very difficult language, sometimes to a point where even native English-speakers have considerable trouble.
