What's school for?
The other day I was in the middle of a wood working project and I had a problem – how to make a piece of wood completely flat and square with hand tools. I thought: What would Mr. L'Hommedieu say? Mr. L'Hommedieu was my 7th grade shop teacher at IS 74 in Bayside, Queens. He taught wood shop, and metal shop. I learned how to make a lamp, a metal box and assorted other things. I can trace my love of wood work back to him, although it took nearly 15 years to discover that I have a knack for working with my hands and that I enjoy it immensely.
I'm here to school you on education
Last March the Register held a contest to “Win Your Own Blog.” Of course I entered, I’m opinionated, well informed on some topics, a good bluffer on others. I like the give and take of the online and I am passionate about my beliefs, particularly when it comes to education. I thought that would make a good blog topic. Well, the very capable Ms. Phoebe Harper won. However, Dan Ross e-mailed me a few days later and said he could be persuaded to have a blog about education.
Adios to the Latino Adult Institute
The Latino Adult Institute of the Napa Valley has served the Latino communities of the Napa Valley for the past 11 years, having been founded in 1998. All educational programs and services have been offered to students free of charge, thanks to the full sponsorship of the De La Salle Christian Brothers.
Putting homes where they should be
As outlined on this page Saturday, Napa County is once again grappling with ways to set aside as much land for new homes as the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development requires.
Lend a hand at Grad Nite
Dear editor, Napa Grad Nite has been a success every year since the late 1980s. Most of the credit goes to the wonderful volunteers that have staffed the event. The approximated 300 volunteers make sure that our graduating seniors have a fun, safe and sober night. This year our volunteer list is coming up short. Grad Nite and the 2009 senior class need our community’s help! The event itself is a ton of fun for the graduating class and the volunteers as well. Please sign up online at www.napagradnite.com or give me a call at 815-6966. Thank you!
Please don't feed the animals
Dear editor, I am writing to bring attention to the fact that one of the sheep at Connolly Ranch on Browns Valley Road was killed because it was fed human food over Memorial Day weekend. I know it is tempting to feed the ducks, geese and animals, but doing so puts their lives in danger. In this particular case, our ram was fed bread. He suffered for three days before he finally died. Please, please, please do not feed the four-legged animals at Connolly Ranch.
Don't drop housing plan near Silverado
Dear editor, Local political commentator Michael Haley is right. Napa County needs more affordable housing, especially in the low and very low categories. But build them where?
Lake Luciana vote was a mistake
The vote against the Lake Luciana project today flies in the face of County rules for acceptable uses in the open space area of the agricultural watershed, and was a mistake.
Say hello to Phoebe Harper
There’s not a lot to say about me.
