Conroy, Napholz named NVC distinguished teachers

Special to the Register

NEWS named nonprofit of the year

“Imagine an organization whose vision is to eliminate the need for their organization. This ‘can-do’ philosophy and visionary approach to the issue of domestic violence is to be commended and recognized, as it is a role model for many communities.”

A big check for groceries

Grace Jung, a student leader for Revo Pacific Union College, presented Napa Valley Food Bank program director Shirley King a check for $8,541.14. Revo PUC is a student group that coordinates an annual fundraiser to benefit a charity. For their second year, Revo went local and selected the Napa Valley Food Bank. King accepted a check from Jung at the Revo Pay Up Party on May 14, which hundreds attended. Said King, “For this many people to actually take into consideration people they don’t know, to actually care about something that they have not ever experienced themselves — that’s huge. The spirit you guys have is obviously contagious or else this many people would not be here, and this much money — Grace told me it’s a little over $5,000 — it’s so much more!” Special to the Register

Flower power

One Saturday a month, a smiling, dark-haired woman arrives at Napa’s Oxbow Public Market at 7 a.m., arms laden with flowers from her St. Helena garden. Amelia Barad Humphries, who once worked until the wee hours at fine restaurants in New York and San Francisco, now rises with the sun to bring her floral arrangements to the market.

New 'Grand Theft' a fun ride

When I imagine the “Grand Theft Auto” series, I think of a massively open world and nice graphics.

Nine rewarding months

The nine months are almost up and I’m exhausted, but happy — much like being pregnant and soon to give birth.

But never heart forget

Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, was instituted in 1868 for those boys in blue and gray who had been killed in our Civil War. Since World War I the day has been observed as a remembrance for the young men, and now women, who have given their all in our nation’s wars.

Surprise showcase

Being a full-time working mom, I had to plan more than just a little to get away for a day in San Francisco with my friend Peta.

Life in an alien world

Those of you who have been reading my bi-weekly essays have by now concluded that I am of an advanced age. I actually fit the classification of seasoned, seasoned citizen.

Too feeble for fun?

I’m getting old. I turned 28 this week.
