Hundley picks off pass in NFL tryout camp

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

Cornerback Marquis Hundley, a tryout player from the University of Arizona, intercepted a pass in a Chicago Bears rookie minicamp in Lake Forest, Ill., over the weekend.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that, “Hundley, a cornerback from Arizona in on a tryout, made a great break on a pass by C.J. Bacher to make an interception. He showed a real burst of speed. He has good size and could be in the mix if the Bears work to sign any tryout players.”

Hundley, a Napa High School graduate, went undrafted after a senior year in which he tied for the team lead with four interceptions as Arizona ended its season by winning the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl. He had 59 total tackles with seven pass breakups and a forced fumble.

He had offseason surgery on his knee, but still worked out for NFL scouts from New England, Carolina and Buffalo last month at Arizona.

Hundley also played at Santa Rosa Junior College, where he was an all-Northern California Conference player.

The Bears had 43 players in for the camp, a series of non-contact practices.

Napa High’s first-round CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls soccer playoff game has been moved from evening to afternoon on Friday.

Instead of a 7:30 p.m. start, the Indians’ game against Elk Grove is at 3:30 p.m. at Napa Memorial Stadium. Napa is the Monticello Empire League’s No. 1 team and Elk Grove is the No. 2 team out of the Delta Valley Conference.

There are 16 schools from seven leagues in the tournament, which continues May 12, 14 and 16.

The Napa Valley College baseball team did not get an at-large berth into the Northern California Regional playoffs. The Storm (22-18 overall, 16-11 Bay Valley Conference) took third place in the BVC. It was the best baseball season by an NVC team since 1993.

Solano (26-16) is the eighth seed and the College of Marin-Kentfield (23-17-1) is the 18th seed for the playoffs, which start this week.

The state championships are May 23-25 at Fresno City College.

Dominican University of California (San Rafael) recently honored Gabby Pecora, a 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter, as its MVP for volleyball.

Pecora, a Justin-Siena graduate, was also named captain for the 2009 season.

Last fall, Pecora was selected to the California Pacific Conference First Team. She played in 72 games and averaged 3.19 kills, .46 service aces, and 3.26 digs per game.

Domincan will leave the CalPac, an NAIA conference, and move into the NCAA Division II-Pacific West Conference for the 2009-10 school year. The league also has Academy of Art University (San Francisco) , Brigham Young University Hawaii, Chaminade University of Honolulu, Dixie State College of Utah, Grand Canyon University, Hawaii Pacific University, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Notre Dame de Namur University.

Mark DeVincenizi pitched 12⁄3 innings to get the win as 13th-ranked Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo scored five runs in the eighth inning for a 7-4 nonconference win Sunday over visiting San Francisco.

DeVincenizi (5-1), a junior right-hander who played baseball at Justin-Siena, walked one and struck out two batters.

Cal Poly (32-12 overall) has won 10 of 11 weekend series and 20 of 22 home games.

Napa High graduate Matt Yourkin threw 22⁄3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win as the Double-A Connecticut Defenders beat Portland (Maine) in an Eastern League game Saturday night, 5-2, in Norwich, Conn. Yourkin (2-1), a left-hander, gave up two hits and struck out four batters.
