NOTES AND QUOTES for a Friday in the Napa Valley:

Napa Valley Martial Arts is having a seminar/event Saturday to promote Douglas Meeks to the rank of grand master, 10th degree black belt in Kenpo karate, which is the highest rank that can be attained in martial arts.
Meeks is a Napa native and a sixth-grade math and science teacher at Harvest Middle School. He is also a senior instructor at Napa Valley Martial Arts.

Master Meeks is a certified instructor in Kenpo, Jeet Kune Do, the Israeli system of Haganah, and a brown belt in Jujitsu. Master Meeks has studied martial arts for over 30 years to achieve this honor and is considered one of the leading practitioners in IKCA Kenpo today.
Attending the event will be IKCA Kenpo Senior Grand Master Chuck Sullivan and Grand Master Vic LeRoux, both of whom are original black belts of the late Grand Master Ed Parker, founder of American Kenpo Karate.

Master Meeks will be the first IKCA black belt to ever be awarded the honor of Grand Master by Grand Masters Sullivan and LeRoux since the inception of the IKCA, formed in 1980 and chartered in 1990.
Also on hand will grand masters from the Filipino Martial Arts as well as a dozen or more masters (fifth degree and up) from various arts to welcome Master Meeks into the realm of Grand Master.

Seminars start at 10 a.m. and the promotion will begin at 1 p.m. with a barbecue at 5 p.m. The $35 cost per person includes a barbecue; it’s $25 without the barbecue.

Napa Valley Martial Arts is located at 2485 Stockton St. in Napa.

Brady Mitchell, president of the Napa Valley Baseball Club, will be my guest on Napa Community Public Access-TV Channel 28 in May.

The half-hour show, “Register Sports with Marty James,” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. and Mondays at noon.

Mitchell is also the field supervisor for Cleve Borman Field at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville. The picturesque ballpark is the home of the Napa Valley Baseball Club and Napa Valley Joe DiMaggio Baseball League.

Mitchell’s company, Brady Mitchell Construction, Inc. of Napa, built new home and visitor dugouts during the offseason. They are over twice the square footage of the previous ones to accommodate larger team rosters.

The project is part of the nonprofit NVBC’s continuing work of renovating Borman Field, a baseball-only facility.

Upgrades have also been made to the irrigation system, both in the infield and outfield.

Cal State Northridge’s Micah Putnam was named as the school’s women’s athlete of the week after batting .500 with a home run as the Matadors swept UC Riverside in a three-game softball series.

Putnam, a Justin-Siena graduate who plays second base, scored the tying run in Northridge’s 5-3 win Sunday.

The senior leads the team with 30 RBIs, nine sacrifice bunts and three home runs. She also has a .968 fielding percentage.

Danny Cacho shot a 75, then chipped in during a playoff, to qualify for the California Golf Association State Amateur.

Cacho, a Santa Clara University freshman and Justin-Siena graduate, was one of nine qualifiers at El Macero Country Club in Davis.

The state amateur is June 22-27 at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City.

Kevin Alexander of Napa (79), Ryan Wycoff of Calistoga (81) and Grant Long of Napa (82) failed to qualify.
