4:20 p.m.The ex-Napa police dispatcher accused of collecting $50,000 in donations by faking claims she suffers from ovarian cancer turned herself in Thursday afternoon and is in custody.

Dannille Vanderpool was to be in Napa County Superior Court at 8:30 a.m., according to attorneys in the state Attorney General's office. She and her attorney, however, attempted to negotiate with state prosecutors on a date when she will turn herself in.
At 1:30, she turned herself in and her attorney, Seth Chazin, asked that she be released on her own recognizance. Napa County Superior Court Judge Rodney Stone denied the request and she remains in custody until she posts bail.

Vanderpool faces 13 grand theft charges, plus one each of forgery and identity theft in the case.
Her preliminary hearing is set for May 28.

" Nice to be able to "pick" your day to surrender. Maybe she's trying to earn some money first to pay people back......or not. "

" Wow. I can't diagnosis anyone but it makes you wonder if it is Munchausen syndrome. They crave above all else the attention and care being extremely ill affords them. If so she really needs treatment. I work with someone who makes up all kinds of things in an attempt to be admired. I think it's just sad when people can not be themselves. "

" Rare, singular incidents are one thing. But when someone like this just gets up every day to see how much they can take from others, well, you've gone to a whole other dimension of criminal conduct. Repetitive theft and multiple victims over an extended period of time. How does one turn off their conscience like that, day after day?

The damage that something like this causes to worthy charitable causes is severe. It's no small thing whatsoever. This just adds to an ever-increasing level of skepticism by donors, and who can blame them. Thanks ma'm. "

" kdbk--

Your concern is valid; however, the head of the firefighters' association (which had raised thousands for this lady) said that this incident will not stop them from helping other people. Good for them! Napa has always been a generous community. "

" Personally, I don't feel most accusers of (non violent) crimes should sit in jail until they've been found guilty unless there's a mound of evidence against them such as a child molester(s), rapists and murderer(s). If she did what she's accused of...throw the book at her. On the other hand, people who are stupid enough to hand over their hard earned money without substantiated facts shouldn't have been so naive! "

" The courts let Mrs. McWilliams, the local teacher out of jail even after shooting her lover with her handgun, and there are many other violent women we read about who are out of jail awaiting trial.

This woman is not violent. It seems that her only crime is that she outsmarted the police and that's why they want her locked up. "

pb wrote on Apr 17, 2009 11:49 AM:

" Right on napamouth. I completely agree about not sitting in jail for something non-violent! Especially when she has a child, is not considered a flight risk & has been 100% cooperative with the investigation.
I think it's that the community has been so outraged and law enforcement /NFD feeling so angry and betrayed, that the judge probably wants to full-out throw the book at her.
I've known this woman for many years and she is not evil, nor would she ever physically or consciously harm anyone. This came as such a shock to her family and friends because she has always been so kind and so filled with life and love - and SO devoted to her daughter.
Of course her daughter is such a victim in this & despite what everyone may think, she loves her dearly. Dannille has a mental issue going on and she knows that - and is very, very perplexed by it. And she knows that she will make restitution - just like anyone else who has committed a crime (assuming she is convicted, which of course, is likely.) She WANTS to make restitution. And she wants to get to the bottom of why she did this.
I agree, also, that facts should have been substantiated - most especially by the fund raisers - as kind and wonderful and generous as they've been. Perhaps this will become a policy now.
I so praise this generous community - all who gave of their money, time, leave and donations. It's a painful thing to have your trust in someone violated. And it takes great strength and courage to try to understand that there is some reason - albeit mental or emotional, behind it all. Either way, she will pay her dues. "

" Okay I do not know her... but $50k is certainly not her getting rich. What she did is terrible no doubt. What she did will scar herself and her child forever. Can you say "change your identity" fast enough? HOWEVER what she did does not make it where she deserves to be behind bars. Now we are paying as a community to house and feed her. Get her out of there and save the space for the truly dangerous. Make her pay back the money and then give her a one way ticket out of Napa. "

" So averagejane, what kind of message do you think she will receive for not receiving any punishment? In fact, what kind of message is that to the next person who decides to rip people off if there are no consequences. I do my best as a mom to let my son know that there are consequences with certain behaviors...If you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences..period "

" I am so frustrated with some of these comments that I felt compelled to respond. I know this person and have had a front row seat to what has transpired over the last couple of years. I can tell you that the 50,000.00 is a drop in the buck! This does not include the numerous families and individuals that have given money undocumented, paid her rent at her previous residence, nor donated their vacation hours to pay her bills. Why do you think that their is a hotline to call if you have been a victim? Yes, maybe she isn't a murder or a violent offender
however she still deserves to be punished for the crime that she has done. My heartfelt thoughts go out to her daughter who deserves none of this. How any mother could let their child think that they were going to die is inexcusable. "
