A former Napa police dispatcher is accused of conning friends, coworkers and residents out of more than $50,000 by falsely claiming she had ovarian cancer.

Dannille Vanderpool, 34, is accused in a Napa County Superior Court criminal complaint filed Tuesday of bilking various groups out of the money under the false pretense that the funds would be used to pay her medical bills and help her care for her young daughter.
Vanderpool faces 13 counts of grand theft, one count of forgery and one of identity theft.

“There was an overwhelmingly good response” to Vanderpool’s requests for donation, said Sgt. Tim Cantillon, Napa Police Officers Association president. “We received donations from one dollar to thousands of dollars from individuals and groups.”
More than $11,000 was donated through the Napa Fire Fighter’s Association and $5,800 from the Napa Police Officer’s Association.

In an October 2007 Register interview, Vanderpool said she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001 and had five separate relapses, the most recent in May 2007. She told the Register at that time she had surgery and was able to return to work. Vanderpool also claimed then that the cancer was back again a month after surgery, leading to chemotherapy treatments. She said the chemo didn’t stop the disease and that doctors recommended surgery, but then determined her kidneys were failing and that she was too weak for surgery.
Cantillon said his group was approached in 2007 to help collect donations and distribute them to Vanderpool through a trust account. Vanderpool was a cosigner on the account, allowing her restricted access to the funds, said Cantillon.

“It could only be used for what it was advertised for — to pay for medical bills,” Cantillon said.

Money raised by Napa Fire Fighter’s Association fundraisers went into that same account, said Patrick Wamsley, association president.

Vanderpool has not been arrested, but Napa Police Cmdr. Steve Potter said he expects her to surrender voluntarily. She is scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 Thursday morning, according to the office of the state attorney general, which is prosecuting the case.

Suspicions arise

Concerns about her claims of being ill came up in November 2008, said Potter.

“There were some of her coworkers who were friends and some associates who became suspicious, and they brought that to the attention of our administration,” Potter said. “There were inconsistencies in what she was telling them what was going on and observations they were making.”

Cantillon said his group also noticed a problem when reviewing the monthly bank statements for the account.

“A check was noticed that was made out to an entity not medically related or even remotely related to anything to help her,” Cantillon said, “and that is what prompted us to look into this.”

Attempts to contact Vanderpool for comment, including going to her Napa home, were unsuccessful.

Potter said an internal investigation began based on the statements from friends and coworkers. “We started taking steps to verify some information and as we went through those steps our suspicions were heightened, so we began a criminal investigation,” said Potter.

Potter said a series of search warrants was served on Vanderpool in December 2008 and January 2009 regarding medical and financial records. A search warrant was also issued for Vanderpool’s Napa home.

Potter said Vanderpool already had resigned from her position as a dispatcher when that search was done at her house.

Results of the investigation went to the Napa district attorney’s office, which referred the case to the attorney general’s office, resulting in Monday’s filing of the 15-part criminal complaint.

Gerald Engler, senior assistant attorney general in San Francisco, said his office and local law enforcement authorities decided it would be better for an out-of-county agency to handle the case, because many of Vanderpool’s alleged victims are in local law enforcement.

Should Vanderpool be convicted of grand theft, Engler said he would expect she be required to repay the money.

“If there were to be a conviction in this case, that would certainly be a standard consequence to call for restitution,” Engler said.

The maximum punishment for grand theft charges is three years in state prison, Engler said. Conviction on grand theft charges could result in consecutive terms, increasing the total prison time to six years.

" Curious; in yesterday's article it was stated,
"The investigation LEADING TO THE ARREST was conducted by the Napa Police Department" (emphasis added).
Todays, "Vanderpool HAS NOT BEEN arrested."
Seems like an easy enough fact to get straight, why the discrepancy?
p.s. I'm bothered by the fact that they printed this woman's daughter's name in yesterday's article, regardless of the context. "

" Clearly this article while implying that Vanderpool has acted inappropriately with funds donated for her cause, this article does not produce any medical evidence to support the claim that her ovarian cancer is either true or a fraud. Do medical records exsist? If so exsistng or non-exsisting medical records are a key comment missing from this press release. It is one issue to use funds inappropriately, another to gain those funds by mis-representing the truth. So where is the evidence? Feed the BULLDOG, the BULLDOG must be fed! "

" I just feel really bad for the family and child of Ms. Vanderpool. I really wish there was more concrete evidence proving or disproving illness before this cloud of suspicion and presumed guilt hit this family.
At the very least there had to be doctors notes excusing her from work that whole time. Where is the accountability on the part of the Police department. You can not trust everyone, where was Human Resources? "

I only hope that as a community we do not forget her. She will need as much support as possible from school to bedtime. I hope that Dannile explains herself and pays back all the money but I also hope she can show her daughter how wrong this is! "

WOW, IF she is found guilty, I hope they recover the money and clear up the problems associated with her stealing someones identity! 6 years seems a bit much though, 3 years in prison, living with public embarrassment & utter shame...sounds good to me. "

I donated to her cause when Vanderpool had her fundraiser at our local Mary's Pizza. The reason I donated to this cause was to help Vanderpool and her daughter that was probably going to have a mother who may die. Vanderpool had everyone who donated to her cause fooled. I hope she gets what is coming to her and I hope she gets the max time in prison. "

" One thing I am curious about... So the money was put in a trust fund which was to be used for medical expenses only, and they have been reviewing the expenditures. So many $$ must have been used FOR medical expenditures, except the one they found, or the money is still in the account (and contributors can be apid back), or the medical expenses were faked (with or without help from a medical professional, but somebody had to receive the checks). I believe she received some non-monetary help as well (donors in kind). "

" It is bewildering how one could hoodwink so many. Many of us, not previously fans of law enforcement, watched in awe as they pulled together resources to assist someone they believed was in need. Our community has proved caring, generous, and sympathetic. The disbelief felt by the community at large is confounding her close friends and family too. If your mother said, "I have breast cancer. I really don't feel comfortable with you coming with me to my chemo; I'll handle it myself," would you force yourself upon her? question her motives? speculate that she could lie about such a devastating diagnosis? Blaming the city or its employees serves no one. I send applause to our firefighters, law enforcement, businesses and individuals who came forth with their concern and sympathy, and have to believe that this will not dissuade them from their kindness in the future when they are called upon again. This woman has abundant amends to make whatever the outcome of the arraignment. Perhaps the same caring will be given to her knowing that although she never had cancer, she may suffer gravely from mental illness. And wawewaiii keep up the good work even if your sentiments are unpopular. Peace. "

She has lied to her daughter for 6 years about having cancer. What kind of mom would upset her daughter by telling her she is dying, ok granted she wasn't sick and wasn't going to really leave her, but a child doesn't know that. I believe it is a form of child abuse to make your child believe you were sick and dying just to get a little attention. Her daughter is the biggest victim and I hope maybe someday she will be able to put this betrayal behind her. "

People are so quick to condemn a person before all the facts are out. In the old days they called this a lynching. Have we not grown over the years? I didn't give money to her trust. Rather I gave her and her daughter dinner when she felt down. I spent time with her and her daughter. I lovingly spent money on food and delivered it to her when she was down. Was she faking it, possibly. Was she ever ill, yes, I believe so. Am I angry, no. I will try to stand by her as best I can. Her daughter needs to be able to go to school and not be ridiculed by her classmates. Please Parents! If you donated to this cause, please keep your angry comments to yourself so that your children, her daughter's classmates, can't hear you. Children can be so mean at this age. Her daughter is a wonderful little girl and needs to know that she has support...not just with adults, but with her peers... "

" When I first read this I was mad as heck. As a canser survivor myself I was truly upset. People work hard to raise money for cancer causes and this does not help their efforts.
After I read Neesie1313 note here I started re thinking.
I had a brother in law who was a police officer. He was killed in the liune of duty. I recall all to well all the new media from the nightly news on tv and radio to the newspapers all through the trial we had to re live the whole thing all over again,
I can tell you for the absolute truth, the truth never was printed according to the facts. It was exagerated way out of left field.
So I know the media can and does get a little carried away. So for that reason
I think where there are inniocent childred involved the name should be withheald...it serves no purpose to expose a child to the kind of ridicule a kids will go through from their peers.
I suspect there is a whole lot more to come from this story. I am also sure the people who gave their money woulds also not want this child to have to suffer friom this.
this child needs all the compassion we can give her. "

Does the community feel sorry for the little girl, obviously? Would anyone want her to end up in child services, of course not!!! Obviously, this is an extremly caring, giveing community and are we upset that they we as a community were bilked out of their hard earned money, most definitly!!! I can tell you first hand, that I felt such empathy for this woman, being single trying to raise a daughter on her own while on "deaths door" that I did a mass group order for the fundraiser for her, we had quite a contribution to give to her and to find out it was all a scam!!!! What a shame!!! Normallly I would agree that the child belongs with his or her mother, but this lady deserves what she has comming to her and I hope that involves a jail cell to give her a long time to think about what she has done to such carring, generous people!!! Friends introduced me to Dannille because I was trying to reach out to survivors to gain hope that I would survive. I wanted and offered nothing other than friendship and was betrayed!!!! Have you had cancer? If not you have no idea the hurt, anger and emotional stress I have about this. Dannille's attorney was quoted saying "it wasn't about the money". To Dannille it was about the money. She used her precious daughter for financial gain. She used photographs of her and her daughter to gain sympathy which lead to money from all of us. You remember the one where Dannille is wearing a scarf to cover her bald head, the one where she is going through chemo. You don't go to a fundraiser to give good thoughts, you go to give money, which she gladly accepted. I have one thing to say to all of you that are supporting her in her time of need. Please get toghter and loan Dannille the $50,000 that she has stolen from us. I'm sure her followers and supporters can come up with the cash. She didn't seem to have a problem making bail! "

I seriously believe that it was about attention. She's an actress and I believe she was playing the role of her life. My thoughts are that she was believing the role she was playing. At some point she must have been getting the attention she needed because she was in 'remission'. It wasn't until she needed the attention again, that it escallated. Yes, what she's done was wrong. I think her day in court will come and then hopefully it will all come out. "
