Vintage grad Wallace fourth in 1,500-meter run

Sophomore Lea Wallace took fourth place in the women’s 1,500-meter run for Cal State Sacramento at the school’s Mondo Invitational Saturday.

Wallace, a 2006 Vintage High School graduate and three-time CIF State Meet qualifier, clocked a time of 4:28.87. There were 29 runners in the race.

Wallace, a middle distance runner from Napa, attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo before transferring to Sacramento. She ran cross country and track for the Mustangs and was the Big West Conference champion in the 800 in 2007.

She advanced to the state meet three straight years for Vintage in the 800. Wallace was eighth in the finals as a senior. As a junior, she was fifth.

Napa driver David Goodwill won the season-opening race for the Northern California Modified Association Asphalt Sprint Car Division Saturday at Madera Speedway.

Goodwill started at the rear of the field for the 50-lap main event, but lapped several cars before the race was completed.

With Erin DeGoede of Napa at coxswain, the Cal State Sacramento women’s varsity eight won a silver medal in the San Diego Crew Classic’s Cal Cup grand final Sunday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay.

It marked the second-highest finish at the event for the Hornets in school history.

Sacramento, which advanced to the grand final after winning its heat, rowed to a second-place time of 7:14.06 over 2,000 meters. St. Joseph’s took first place.

DeGoede is a junior who went to Justin-Siena and competed in swimming and water polo.

Last year, DeGoede spent the final eight spring regattas as the coxswain of the team’s varsity eight.

Brian Cole finished second in the 1,500-meter run (4:06.83) and fifth in the 800 (1:59.51) for Williams College at the University of Central Florida Invitational in Orlando last month.

Cole is from St. Helena.

There were 15 teams in the meet.

Mark DeVincenzi is having a very good year as a relief pitcher for Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

The right-hander, a Justin-Siena graduate, is 3-0 with a 2.45 earned run average in 17 appearances for the Mustangs (21-7 overall). In 33 innings, DeVincenzi has allowed 32 hits and 13 runs (nine earned) while striking out 31 and walking 12. Opponents are batting .254 off of him.

John Cortese of Napa is listed as a redshirt freshman wide receiver on the Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo football roster.

The UC Davis softball team, coached by Karen Yoder of Napa, is 19-16 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference.

Freshman Emily Talley of Napa carded rounds of 78, 76 and 78 for a 232 total and tied for 53rd for the University of Colorado women’s golf team at the Ping/Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The tournament wrapped up on Sunday.

Colorado was 15th in the 17-team field. It was one of the strongest collegiate fields of the year.

The Big 12 Conference Tournament, April 23-25 in Lubbock, Texas, is next for CU.

Mak Kirmse had a goal and two assists for the Napa Junior Lacrosse Club varsity team in a 9-6 loss to Petaluma.

Jason Boldt of the Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville tied for 12th with a 3-over-par 75 Monday at the Northern California PGA Pro Series 4, a one-day tournament that was held Monday at Lake Merced Golf & Country Club in Daly City.

Joe Moulton of Morgan Creek in Citrus Heights captured first place with a 70.
