With this newspaper’s focus on the Napa Valley, I never figured I’d have professional use for the Montana Standard in Butte or the Chico Enterprise Record or the Riverside Press-Enterprise (a lot of enterprising people in this business!).

My name is Olivia McCoy and I’m an eighth-grader at Harvest Middle School. As you well know, because of the budget cuts many teachers received pink slips on Friday the 13th. Several of those outstanding teachers have been mine. One of them was not only a wonderful teacher but she really connected with the students. The way the budget cuts are being made is simply unjust.

The National Animal Identification System was designed by NIAA (the National Institute of Animal Agriculture), a corporate consortium consisting of Monsanto, industrial meat producers such as Cargill and Tyson, and surveillance companies such Viatrace, AgInfoLink, and Digital Angel. The NAIS scheme fits agribusiness, biotech and surveillance companies to a tee:

Dear editor, with reference to the March 17 letter, “Judge Napa Pipe on its merits,” by Steve Orndorf. It is great to have an old-timer Napan getting involved. Too bad Steve didn’t work at Kaiser Steel, and having arrived in Napa in 1980 he missed seeing the big wood towers over the wells.
