CalPac basketball honors for PUC’s Barnes, Monty

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Monday in the Napa Valley:

Pacific Union College’s Kameron Barnes was named the Defender of the Year and the Pioneers’ Brandon Monty was chosen to the first team on the all-California Pacific Conference men’s basketball team.

Barnes, a 6-foot-5 junior forward from Oakland, averaged 13 points and eight rebounds per game for the Pioneers, who lost to Menlo College, 59-50, in the opening round of the CalPac Tournament at Haynes-Prim Pavilion in Atherton last month.

Barnes, the CalPac Player of the Week for the dates of Jan. 12-19, was also chosen honorable mention.

The Pioneers’ Brandon Monty, a 6-2 junior forward from Las Flores, was named first team. Monty averaged 14.9 points and four rebounds per game.

The Napa Valley Express’ 10-and-under team opened its 2009 softball season by going 2-4 and finishing fourth at the Luck of the Irish, a tournament held in Manteca.

Napa was down 7-0, but came back to beat Central Valley Freeze from Tulare, 10-9.

Kylee Malley and Emily Schuttish each hit home runs. Joelle Aiello got two wins.

Matt Gagne is the Express’ manager. Scott Baumbach and Darrin Vogen are the team’s coaches.

Napa High School graduate Jason Westerberg earned his first NCAA-Division I save Saturday in Santa Clara’s 11-6 nonconference win over visiting Dartmouth at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Westerberg pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Broncos and gave up two hits while striking out two batters.

He also had a no-decision in his first career start against UC Davis on March 11.

Michael Gastelum of St. Helena went 2-for-4 with an RBI, stolen base and a team-best six assists at second base as St. Mary’s College beat Utah Valley University, 10-7, in the opening game of the Oregon State Tournament in Corvallis, Ore., Friday.

Gastelum is a St. Helena High graduate.

Napa Valley players fared well in recent junior tennis tournaments.

Benedicto Llave of American Canyon won the boys 14’s singles title at the U.S. Tennis Association’s Deer Valley Challenger, beating Connor Loken of Tracy in the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-0), Jack Philip of Alamo in the semifinals (6-3, 6-0), and Laurence Atkins of Oakland in the finals (6-2, 6-0).

Michael Guzman of Napa beat Andrew Ball of Palo Alto in the quarterfinals of the boys 16’s singles at the Modesto Junior Championships, 7-6 (4), 7-5 (5).

Left-hander Jordan Roualdes won his third straight game, scattering seven hits over seven innings, as Nebraska beat No. 11 Oklahoma State, 12-4, Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field in Lincoln, Neb.

It was Nebraska’s third straight win against a ranked opponent.

Roualdes (3-1), a Justin-Siena graduate, struck out one and walked two.

“Jordan was great and he pitched with a lead, which I thought was very good,” Huskers coach Mike Anderson said on the school’s athletic Web site. “His best innings were the fifth and sixth, where he got a little tight situations, and he pitched out of them.

“I loved the fact that our defense played strong behind him. We needed Roualdes to go deeper into the game and he did. That was a big, big plus for us.”

Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo left-hander Matt Leonard (3-0) threw 76 pitches in six innings for his third straight win as the Mustangs, ranked No. 16, beat visiting Cal State Bakersfield, 15-3, Saturday.

Leonard, a graduate of Justin-Siena, allowed two runs and six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

It was Cal Poly’s fourth straight win.

The 2008-09 boys and girls basketball season came to an end with the CIF State Championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento Friday and Saturday.

In boys finals, Westchester-Los Angeles beat McClymonds-Oakland, 49-31 (Division) I; Eisenhower-Rialto beat Rocklin, 73-61 (Div. II); Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco beat Ocean View-Huntington Beach, 62-55 (Div. III); Salesian-Richmond beat Bishop Montgomery-Torrance, 65-64 (Div. IV); and Windward-Los Angeles downed St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda), 69-53.

In girls finals, it was Poly-Long Beach over Monte Vista-Danville, 57-33 (Div. I); Brea Olinda-Brea over Carondelet-Concord, 68-45 (Div. II); St. Mary’s-Stockton over Inglewood, 71-62 (Div. III); Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista) over Modesto Christian, 54-41 (Div. IV); and Bellarmine-Jefferson of Burbank over Pinewood-Los Altos Hills, 55-47 (Div. V).
