Five members of a St. Helena family died Sunday in a Montana plane crash in which authorities say there were no survivors.

Dr. Erin Jacobson, his wife, Amy, and their children Taylor, 4, Ava, 3, and Jude, 2, were en route to Bozeman to visit friends and family.
“They were going to Bozeman for the week — (Amy’s) parents were already there,” said Elizabeth Naylor of Angwin, a close friend of the Jacobson family for the past three years.

“They were extraordinary, wonderful, giving and kind. Our daughters grew up together. My daughter asked today if we could have their daughter over for a play date this week, and we told them we could after they got back.”
The Jacobsons, who lived on Pratt Avenue, were active in the Montessori Family Center in St. Helena.

“Erin was an eye doctor, a surgeon, in St. Helena and Napa, and Amy was a dental hygienist in Angwin, but she was a full-time mom to three children,” said Naylor. “Everybody in town knows them — they were really, truly an amazing family.”
The Jacobsons were among the passengers on a single-engine turbo prop airplane that crashed into Butte’s Holy Cross Cemetery Sunday afternoon, bursting into flames and killing everyone aboard — believed to be 16 people.

Authorities are being tight-lipped while the crash is under investigation, but eyewitnesses to the event describe a harrowing scene. The crash occurred about 500 feet from the airport, authorities said.

Kristi Dunks, air safety investigator for the Southwest Regional Office of the National Transportation Safety Board, confirmed there were no survivors.

Dunks declined to offer information about the plane or why it crashed. Dunks also would not say if there had been a distress call from the pilot.

It was partly cloudy, the visibility was 10 miles and winds were blowing from the northwest around 10 mph at the time of the crash, according to the National Weather Service.

The aircraft had departed from Oroville, 70 miles north of Sacramento, and the pilot had filed a flight plan showing a destination of Bozeman, about 85 miles southeast of Butte. But the pilot canceled his flight plan at some point and headed for Butte, said Mike Fergus, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Dunks said it was attempting to land at Bert Mooney Airport when it crashed. Officials at the Butte airport said they had no radio contact with the plane. Dunks said the plane did not have a “black box” voice data recorder on board.

Fergus said that a large number of the dead were children. “We think that it was probably a ski trip for the kids,” Fergus said.

The plane was registered to Eagle Cap Leasing Inc. in Enterprise, Ore., Fergus said. The flight originated from San Diego on Saturday night.

Tom Hagler, who runs an aviation business at the Oroville Municipal Airport, said he saw a group of about a dozen children and four adults Sunday morning at the airport. Hagler, owner of Table Mountain Aviation, a business that conducts flight training and maintenance at the city-owned airport, said, “There were a lot of kids in the group. A lot of really cute kids.”

Hagler said he showed the pilot where he could fill up on fuel, and the pilot said he expected his flight to take two and a half hours.

Dunks said Sunday evening that the bodies have not been recovered from the site. Butte-Silver Bow Coroner Lee LaBreche is on the scene, and Sheriff John Walsh said the Missoula County coroner is also involved.

Dunks said more information should be available Monday morning. She said specialists from Washington, D.C., arrived late Sunday and representatives from the manufacturer of the plane and its engines are also on their way.

Tim Trainor, Pat Ryan and Gerard O’Brien of the Montana Standard, a sister paper of the Napa Valley Register in Butte, Mont., contributed to this story, as did the Associated Press.

" Wow... this was my eye doctor and his family... I had just gone into see him about 2 weeks ago. Neither of us wanted to talk about the bad economy, so we talked about fun stuff, about trips. He told me he had just gone to Whistler for a ski trip, and got to do the helicopter skiing, which was great. He was looking forward to this trip with his family in Montana. I will miss him, he was a great and wonderful doctor. He was young and full of vitality. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends and everyone who knew him. He will be missed. "

" Our family's prayers are with the Jacobsons families, and the other families as well. I don't feel that NVR should have the above photo posted for this article however. "

" Why shouldnt NVR post this photo? Its not graphic, it simply depicts what happened. I think there is too much censorship in this paper already. Open your eyes chchchchia, ugly things happen in this world even to the people in St. Helena. "

" Wow...this is the saddest story I have ever read...parents and children. I do agree the photo is difficult when it hits so close to home. My prayers are with the family. "

" Sadly it will be four years this Thursday, March 26th, that my nephew his wife and their ten year old son along with another couple and their teenage son were killed in a private plane (also a Pilatus c12) crash. There too all six were killed immediately. The end for both planes is similarly eerie with both planes death spiraling straight into the ground. This is a terribly sophisticated plane as I understand it. Perhaps pleasure travel is best accommodated by regulated commercial airlines. My heart goes out to the family as I still comfort my family. "

" My thoughts and prayers are with the family and community. I was in Butte yesterday when my father recieved the call. He was the Incident Commander in charge of the scene until the NTSB arrived late last night. St. Helena should know that the people of Butte are mourning this horrible tragedy as well and are not alone in this tragic loss. "

" This is very tragic...and of course the speculation is already starting whether or not the plane was overloaded...
As someone that has been involved in flying all my life... from being an ex-stew to running a crop dust service..and spending many hours in private planes...I can offer that the number of occupants is not as crucial as their weight...and of course having enough seat belts and seats available would not have come into play this particular instance...because the plane exploded...
I am curious however why there was so much fuel left on board after a quite lengthy trip...hopefully the investigators will find out the cause...so that other families do not have to go through this horrific tragedy...my heart goes out to them..albeit unbeknownst.... "

" Dr. Jacobson did my 5 yr old's surgery about 2 months ago. He was one of those doctors you looked forward to see. Always in a good mood. Very caring and sympathetic. He always talked about his family with such love. I'm so very sorry for those who lost them. He and his family will be missed. "

" I saw Dr. Jacobson just last month... I have been going through the excruciating process of getting a diagnosis with only Medi Cal as my insurance... He was very encouraging and concerned and made a point to get my referral to a specialist on the fast track (something that just doesn't happen for Medi Cal patients) He was the first doctor in the system who seemed to have all the time in the world for me and my questions. I am heartbroken that he and his family are no longer with us. I take comfort thinking that they are all together still. I will be keeping their extended families in my prayers. "

" My heart goes out to the family and friends, partients, neighbors, etc of Dr. Jacobson, his wife, and his small children. This was a terrible accident that reminds us that we can lose our loved ones at any moment in an accident like this. But please don't forget that the deaths of entire families (including so many small children) are a common occurance in countries like Palestine, Afghanistan, and Iraq due to bombings, raids and war crimes funded by our imperial government. For the poor people of these countries it is a normal thing to hear that a family in their community is dead, but these stories remain uncovered by the media for political reasons. My heart goes out to everyone in the world who has lost their family members or children in accidents or wars. "
