NOTES AND QUOTES for a Friday in the Napa Valley:

Michael Gastelum of St. Helena has made six starts and played in 10 games so far as a sophomore second baseman for Saint Mary’s College, which at 9-4 is off to its best start in baseball since the 1994 season.
Gastelum, a 2006 St. Helena High School graduate, is batting .200 with four RBIs for the Gaels, who have received votes in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll. He also has a .913 fielding percentage.

Gastelum’s 2-for-4, three-RBI game helped Saint Mary’s to a 6-5 win over Stanford March 5. His single gave Saint Mary’s a 2-0 lead and his other base hit drove in two runs, extending the Gaels’ lead to 4-1.
As a true freshman last year, Gastelum played in 18 games and recorded his first collegiate hit against San Jose State. He got his first RBI against San Francisco State.
