NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:
Third baseman Brett Wallace, St. Louis’ top pick in the 2008 major league draft and a two-time Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year from Arizona State, was reassigned by the Cardinals to the minor leagues on Sunday.
Wallace, a former Justin-Siena High School star, was a non-roster invitee to the major league camp in Jupiter, Fla., but had only six at-bats in five games. Wallace, who had one hit with one strikeout, joined 14 other players who were reassigned during spring training.
“In Wallace’s case, it was about getting experience, getting to see what big league camp was all about,” general manager John Mozeliak said on the Cardinals’ Web site. “Now we’ll let him go get into a routine and get work in minor league camp. It’s going to allow us to spend a few individual days with him to get some special work in as well after the off-day (Monday).”
“There’s a good chance several of these guys will be seen again. But it just gets too crowded here for the drills. It’s counterproductive,” said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.
Wallace, a Sonoma resident, is the only player in Arizona State history to lead the team in hitting three straights seasons, and he did it all while playing multiple positions on the field.
In 2008 Wallace became the only player in Pac-10 history to win back-to-back Triple Crowns, leading the Sun Devils to a second straight conference championship. Batting .410 with 22 homers and 83 RBIs, he was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year and a First Team All-American for the second consecutive year.
He played in 54 games in the minors last year, batting .337 with 16 doubles, eight home runs and 36 RBIs between Class A and Double-A ball.
He was also selected to participate in the Arizona Fall League for the Peoria Saguaros. He hit .309 for Peoria, homering six times and driving in 24 runs in 24 games. He was chosen to play in the AFL All-Star game.
