The third time was the charm for 19-year-old Tiffany Flossman, who earned the title Miss Napa County 2009 on Saturday night.

New Tech High student Gracie Damran, 16, won a separate competition to be named Napa County’s Outstanding Teen.

“I’m really excited,” said Flossman. “I’m so happy. I worked really hard this year.”

This was Flossman’s third year competing in the Miss Napa County program. In 2008, she was named first runner-up.

Flossman will spend the next year making appearances, raising awareness about the Miss America scholarship program, and promoting her platform “Cancer Prevention Through Early Education.” This summer, she’ll represent the county at the Miss California pageant in Fresno.

Flossman literally towered over the competition as three-inch heels and the three-inch high crown added to her already 6-foot-1-inch frame.

Flossman beamed as she knelt to allow Sarah Rutan, Miss Napa County 2008, to reach the top of her coifed head and crown her.

The UC Davis sophomore won over the judges with her vocal performance of “Big Spender” from “Sweet Charity.” Teen winner Damran demonstrated a cup stacking routine set to music. Other standout performances included Mindi Long’s contemporary ballet, Shelby Holliday’s energetic cheer and gymnastics routine — complete with back flips — and Ashley Mendez’s version of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” complete with signature wink at the end.

Between sets, students from Expressions Dance Studio entertained the audience with dynamic dance routines, and Miss California’s Outstanding Teen 2008 Crystal Lee also wowed the crowd with two separate dance performances.

But in the end it was Flossman who stood head and shoulders above the rest.

“I’m excited,” said Miss Napa County co-executive director Mary Jean Bruce, “She’ll make a really great Miss Napa County.”

Kathy Flossman said she was very proud of her daughter. “She’ll do a great job representing Napa.”

Flossman has her hands full. Besides being a pre-med student, she also models, sings, plays the piano and alto sax, draws, paints and is a track and field champion. The Vintage High School class of 2007 graduate hopes to become a pediatric oncologist or fertility specialist. 

So now that she’s won the title, what’s Flossman going to do next? “I’m going to Denny’s and eat lots of curly fries and have a milk shake,” she said.

The Miss Napa County Scholarship Organization began in 1961 and is a part of the Miss California/Miss America system. The Miss America Organization is the largest provider of scholarships for young women in the world. This year Miss Napa County provided $8,500 in scholarship awards.
