9:30 a.m.OAKLAND — Commuters taking BART trains through Oakland experienced few problems during a rush hour protest yesterday.

The demonstrators were protesting the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant by then-BART police officer Johannes Mehserle on Jan. 1. Mehserle is a 2000 graduate of New Technology High School in Napa.
Despite a pledge by protesters to shut down Oakland’s Fruitvale station, BART officials say there were no disruptions to service during Thursday’s evening commute.

When several dozen protesters carrying signs and chanting converged on the station about 4 p.m., they were met by extra BART and Oakland police officers.
Officers escorted some passengers through theturnstiless, while other passengers were directed to a side door.
