NOTES AND QUOTES for a Thursday in the Napa Valley:
Jocelyn Phillips had a very good meet for Florida State at the 2009 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in College Park, Md.
Phillips, a Vintage High School graduate and former member of the Napa Valley Swim Team, swam on the third-place 800-yard freestyle relay team, fifth-place 400 free relay team, and fifth-place 400 medley relay team.
Phillips was also sixth in the championship final of the 200 freestyle, 15th in the consolation final of the 500 freestyle, and 18th in the bonus consolation of the 100 free.

Devin Tinney, a freshman forward for Pacific Union College, was named honorable mention on the all-California Pacific Conference women’s basketball team.
Tinney averaged 12.7 points per game on 40.8 percent shooting from the floor and shot 61.7 percent at the free-throw line.
Tinney’s high point game of the year came against Southwestern Bible College, when she went for 19 points.

Bob Zanardi, a long-time supporter of Napa High athletics, will be the guest of the “KVON Sportsvine” Saturday.
The show starts at 9 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM and is hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod.

Napa’s Frank Abbott lost to Gary Vanier of Pleasant Hill, 1-up, Wednesday in the PayPal San Francisco City Championships in the senior division at Harding Park Golf Course. Vanier birdied the 18th hole.

Tim Steggall has started the first five games of the season at shortstop and is batting .286 for the University of Texas-Arlington baseball team, which finished second at the 16th annual UTA/Hilton Invitational.
Steggall, a Justin-Siena graduate, was 2-for-5 in Texas-Arlington’s 8-6 loss to Texas State.
He was also 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in a run in a 12-1 win over Siena.

In his first start of the 2009 season, Matt Leonard of Napa pitched four innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out three in Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo’s 7-6 win Saturday over Rice. Leonard played at Justin-Siena.

Ricky Del Zompo of Napa had an RBI double for San Francisco State in the Gators’ 10-5 loss to Cal State Los Angeles in California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball action Saturday. Del Zompo is a Vintage graduate who transferred to San Francisco from Napa Valley College.

Jordan Roualdes pitched well in his first NCAA-Division I start, allowing three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings for Nebraska Sunday in a nonconference game against Louisiana-Lafayette that ended in a 5-5 tie.
Roualdes, who played baseball at Justin-Siena, left with a 4-3 lead, but neither starter was involved in the decision. Roualdes walked three and struck out one.
