NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

Lindsey Meyers, a student at Pacific Union College, was 47th in the second annual Amgen Tour of California women’s criterium, a professional cycling event Sunday in Santa Rosa. Meyers is from Paradise and rides for Sugar CRM.

The first event of the 2009 season on the National Racing Calendar, the criterium took part over portions of the Stage 1 men’s finishing circuit in Santa Rosa.  The event consisted of a field of 88 riders competing for more than $15,000 in prizes.

Set as a category Pro 1,2 race and with a limit of eight cyclists per team, the criterium showcased some of the world’s top professional women’s cycling teams, including defending champion Brooke Miller of Team TIBCO, who finished 15th overall.

Welcomed by thousands of fans lining the streets of Santa Rosa, it featured Emila Fahlin, the youngest member of Team Columbia-Highroad, winning the criterium race with an impressive performance, beating out an outstanding field of international competitors.

Jeff King, a four-time champion, is entered in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which begins March 7 in Anchorage, Alaska. The race covers 1,131 miles and finishes in Nome.

King graduated from St. Helena High School and makes his home at Goose Lake in Denali, Alaska. He began mushing in 1976 and is the owner-operator of Goose Lake Kennels, breeding, raising and training 60 to 70 Alaskan Huskies a year.

He won the Iditarod in 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2006.

Lucas Euser, riding for the Garmin-Slipstream pro cycling team, was 43rd in the seventh and final stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia Sunday.

Euser is a 2002 Napa High graduate.

Last year he won the Univest Grand Prix in Souderton, Pa., and captured a stage during the team time trial at the Tour of Georgia.

Saturday’s “KVON Sportsvine” will focus on Napa High. Guests include Troy Mott, head football coach; Steve Hatton, assistant football coach; Hollie Schmidt, coach of the spiritleaders and the director of the school’s dance department; and Caryn Green, president of the NHS sports booster club.  The show starts at 9 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM and is hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod.

Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa, coached by Tom Bonfigli, wrapped up an undefeated regular season for boys basketball with Friday’s 80-64 North Bay League win over Ukiah. Newman is 26-0 overall.

Andrew Damron of Yountville had rounds of 72 at Harding Park and 79 at Lincoln Park for a 151 total and qualified for the men’s championship division of the PayPal San Francisco City Golf Championships. Damron tied for 38th. The event continues Saturday at Harding Park.

Opening Day ceremonies for the Napa Junior Girls Softball League are April 4 at 8 a.m. at the league’s complex at the Napa Valley Language Academy, next door to the Napa Premium Outlets.

Nick Watney, the winner of the PGA Tour’s Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in La Jolla earlier this month, is from Dixon. Watney took the lead for the first time on the final shot of the tournament, a two-foot birdie putt, to complete a five-shot comeback for his second career victory.
