Lucky to have known Jean Louis Hill
Dear editor, A few weeks ago, I read a simple obituary about a beautifully simple man, Jean Louis Hill. I grew up in Wooden Valley, where Jean lived as well. I attended Wooden Valley Elementary, a one-room school. Jean volunteered his time to teach art to the children there for many years and it was the highlight of Thursday afternoons.
Napa not what it used to be
Dear editor, As I sit here in my chair all the way in Nebraska, I think about all the memories I have as a child growing up in the city of Napa. I remember how big of an ordeal it was to have the outlet stores in our growing city. I guess what I’m getting to is that bigger isn’t always better. I go and visit my family every year and can’t believe how far away Napa has gotten away from our idea of a close-knit community we prided ourselves on.

Dear editor, The article written on nursing homes was fantastic (“Feds rate local nursing homes,” Feb. 7). This should’ve been done a long time ago. I had a horrible experience with one.
Napa County pension reforms
This week Napa County began a process of examining what to do about the enormous deficits in pensions due to the meltdown of the stock market. Pension and actuarial expert John Bartel presented an actuarial analysis on Tuesday to the Board of Supervisors to begin this process.
Environmental costs have real impact
Tuesday, the Napa County Board of Supervisors will look at the principles guiding them in this years budget preparation process, and one thing on the agenda giving me pause is the statement "Pursue new revenues to the fullest extent possible for all services.”
Are school Valentine's Day cards still OK?
Remember when we were kids and we took Valentine's Day cards to school? In some of my elementary school classes there would be bags for the cards to be put in so no one could see if one person had a lot and another only had a few.

Buffalo wings. Those awesome little deep-fried nuggets of spicy chicken goodness, dunked in thick bleu cheese dressing. I can trash a pile of them in one sitting. But where are the best wings in Napa?
