Vintage grad helps boost Stanislaus to twinbill victory

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

Napa’s Tomas Donnelly hit two home runs in the second game Sunday as Cal State Stanislaus swept a nonconference doubleheader and completed a four-game weekend sweep of St. Martin’s at Warrior Field in Turlock.

Donnelly went 4-for-4 with two homers, five RBIs and two runs scored as Stanislaus won, 10-0. The Warriors hit five home runs in Game 2. Three of those came in the second inning alone.

Donnelly’s first home run came on a 1-2 pitch.

An infielder/outfielder, Donnelly was named all-Napa County for Vintage High School in 2003. He was named first team all-Bay Valley Conference and all-state after breaking the batting average record (.444) and hits record for Napa Valley College in 2006. Donnelly, a senior, attended Cal State Sacramento, but did not play baseball. Stanislaus (4-1 overall) beat St. Martin’s in the first game, 14-1.

Florida State sophomore swimmer Jocelyn Phillips placed in four events in the Seminoles’ 166-120 loss Saturday to Auburn at the Bobby E. Leach Center pool in Tallahassee, Fla.

Phillips, a Vintage graduate, took third place in the 500-yard freestyle and swam the second leg on Florida State’s second-place 200 freestyle relay team.

She was also eighth in the 200 free and 100 free.

Next up for the Seminoles is the 2009 ACC Championships, Feb. 18-21 in College Park, Md.

Jimmy Cacho, a junior, will play for Santa Clara University when the men’s golf team begins its 2009 spring campaign. The Broncos began play in the Mardi Gras Classic, hosted by the University of New Orleans, Monday. The two-day event will be held at the TPC of Louisiana Golf Course, and the field includes Campbell, Kennesaw State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Mercer, Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, St. Mary’s (Calif.), Texas-San Antonio, Troy, West Florida and host UNO.

Cacho is a Justin-Siena graduate and plays out of Green Valley Country Club in Solano County.

Santa Clara will compete in five tournaments in the spring.

Lindsey Dreher of Napa had three rebounds and two points as the 12th-ranked UC San Diego women’s basketball team won its 14th straight game with a convincing 84-66 victory over Cal State L.A. Saturday at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles.

Dreher is a Napa High graduate and a sophomore forward who transferred to San Diego from Sonoma State.

UCSD is 21-2 overall and is unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at 14-0. The Tritons have already locked up a spot in the CCAA Tournament.

Napa High band director Harry Cadelago will be the guest of the “KVON Sportsvine” Saturday. Cadelago is director of instrumental music at NHS.

The hour-long show starts at 9 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM and is hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod.

The presenting Eagle Cycling Club and Eagle Racing Team estimated that Sunday’s 34th annual Cherry Pie Criterium bike races, which were sanctioned by USA Cycling, generated $25,000 for the local economy.

Ricky Del Zompo had the game-winning hit, a one-out single to left field in the sixth inning, to lead San Francisco State past visiting Oregon Tech, 2-1, in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at Maloney Field Sunday.

Del Zompo is a Vintage graduate and a transfer from Napa Valley College.

UC Davis opened the 2009 softball season by going 3-1 at the Cathedral City Kickoff.

The Aggies are coached by Karen Yoder of Napa.

Mary Peck of Napa scored a 9.450 in the vault for the visiting Cal State Sacramento women’s gymnastics team in a loss Friday night to San Jose State at Spartan Gym. Peck was 11th in the event.

Haylee Yepson of Napa turned in a season-best mark on the beam with a score of 9.15 for the Seattle Pacific women’s gymnastics team Friday during a meet against visiting UC Davis at Brougham Pavilion.

Davis won the meet.
