11:15 a.m.Wanting a sense of community for a historic event, some 100 Napa residents came to Oxbow Wine Merchant Tuesday morning to watch Barack Obama take the oath of office on two flat screen TVs.

Most drank coffee, while a few broke open bottles of bubbly to toast what they hoped would be a new era for America.
“We didn’t want to watch it at home. We wanted to watch it where there were people,” said Liz Mercer, who had kept her 4-year-old daughter Abbey out of day care to see Obama become president.

This is an event on par with 9/11 for national significance, said her husband, Steve. “We are in an extraordinary place. We’ve elected our first black president,” he said.
The Oxbow crowd sat in rapt silence for most of Obama’s speech, applauding along with the throng on the TV screen for rhetorical flourishes. When Obama stood to sing the national anthem, so did they, many with their hands over their hearts.

“I’m just shaking with gratitude, excitement and hope for our generation. Now it’s our responsibility to take this forward.” said Beth Braby, a singer who said she was especially moved by the event’s music and poetry.
“This is one of the most important things that’s happened in my lifetime,” said Juliane Poirier Locke, wiping her eyes. “I cried through both Aretha Franklin singing and Obama’s speech.”

“I was moved by the depth and power of it,” said husband Tim Locke. “I’m filled with hope. It’s great to be with people and share the moment.”

“You can already feel the change and love and hope. It’s coming,” said Cari Hebb of Napa. “It’s tearful. It’s joyous. I can’t wait for what is to happen.”

“I have faith in everything that was spoken,” said her husband, Brent, after Obama’s speech.

Seventeen students from Chamberlain High School came to Oxbow Public Market to witness history. Sixteen-year-old Josue Vigueroa hoped that the Obama administration would “keep it real.”

“I want him to help the Mexicans be part of the American dream,” said 17-year-old Erika Solano.

“I’ve never been interested in politics before,” said Sergio Gallegos, 17. “I believe in the changes he wants to make.”

“I saw people crying. It surprised me,” said Pedro Alvarez, 17. “I’ve never seen people so excited.”

“We wanted to be in the world,” instead of in the classroom, Chamberlain teacher Caroline Wilson said. “We wanted the students to see what an incredible experience this is.”

Watching the inauguration at home alone just wouldn’t have been the same, said Amanda Milos, who had brought along her 3-year-old daughter Talia.

Milos had high hopes for America with Obama as president. “It’s got to be better. We can only go up from here,” she said.

“(Obama) acknowledged our mistakes in the past. He acknowledged what we’re ashamed of, then he moves us forward,” said Anissa Pescio.

“It’s truly one of the most overwhelming moments of my life,” said Keiko Niccolini. “I feel I’ve been an alien in my own country for so long. Everything I felt was right and believed was contradicted by the government. Now I have a home again.”

" Obama truly is the greatest man to ever walk the face of this planet, and it is the absolute right thing to do in indocrinating our children in sharing this indisputable truth. "

" Actually, hawkins707, Jesus Christ was the greatest man to ever walk the face of this planet. "

" hawkins707, lighten up. Let people enjoy the moment. In a few years the kids wil be against everything their parent stand for anyway. By all means, you can continue to route for the man and the country to fail all you want. "

" I wish I would have made it down to Oxbow. I kept my kids home from school to witness something I never would have thought or imagined possible in our lifetime. And for them being of African-American descent it was really important for me to have them witness this. Now when I look at my son and my daughters, I don't just worry about the hardships they face being raised in Napa, now I can tell them you DEFINITELY can be ANYTHING you want to be. I thank the American people for opening doors I thought would be closed to my children just by going out and casting a vote in the hopes that there would be a positive change in this country. No matter how minimal. And no matter a persons political view, it's inspiring to have someone try and rally our country together to really try and boost the morale of the country again. "

" I took my 12 year old son to the Inauguration today. It was a memory of a lifetime for us both. What a day! Back to the much warmer weather of Napa in a few days. :0) "

" This is true only time will tell but so far all seems good and I am looking forward to it. My grandughter turned 6 today and it was a proud day for our family. For her birthday to be shared on the President of the United States of America's day you can't get better than that! "

" lets see... 170 million spent on the party in DC.,during a recession. Probably thousands of kids kept out of school to be part of something that hasn't happened yet, which cost the school districts revenue, because if the kids aren't at school, they don't get paid.Hope is one thing, spending money foolishly is another. " About this statement: "“You can already feel the change and love and hope. It’s coming,” said Cari Hebb of Napa. “It’s tearful. It’s joyous. I can’t wait for what is to happen.”

Well, we elected a man to LEAD, not to do it all for us. I hope people realize that the HOPE the President speaks of, is each of US...literally getting off of our collective butts, and getting to work on these problems.

By the way get over the "party" costs gossip. No one has all the FACTS yet. "

" JimClark...I agree time will tell....tic...tic...tic....tic......time's up, anyboby with his reported super human powers should have fixed this Democrat meltdown by now.......tic...tic....tic...tic...Oh well like the last Democrat smoke and mirrors....

If the libs can already feel it, just hold on and wait til you feel it after House Democrat's drive this recession into a depression by rasing taxes instead of cutting government....then you'll really get the feeling....

Like Lincoln said....'you can fool some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time..but you can't fool all the people all the time....' "

" Glenroy - Actually we are on the verge of the second Republican depression of the last 80 years. Despite your claims that cutting taxes is the only way to stop from getting in a depression, it's just not true, raising taxes on the wealthy isn't going to cause a depression. Cutting taxes doesn't increase revenue no matter how long conservatives have been saying it. Glad to know you're worried about too much government now that Democrats are in charge. Were you upset over the last 8 years of government growth coupled with the largest deficits in the history of our country? "
