A fight in the parking lot of the Super Wal-Mart Store in American Canyon on Monday night resulted in an arrest.

When American Canyon Police arrived at Wal-Mart, they found security guards had wrestled Rommel Natan to the ground and had him in handcuffs, according to Sgt. Mike Collins.
The security guards told police they saw Natan take several items, including food, shirts and electronics, and leave the store without paying for them, Collins said.

When the guards tried to stop Natan outside the store, he started fighting with them, but they were able to overcome him.
Natan admitted to police he went into the store to steal the shirts, Collins said.

When the officers searched Natan, they said he had a glass smoking pipe.
Natan, 26, of Suisun City, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia.

" Officers arrived at Walmart? I thought there was a substation there. Or was that just over the holidays? Given the number of arrests there, I think it should be permanent. "

" Congratulations to the guards for being able to subdue the man. Guards that aren't afraid to take a person down might deter others from trying to steal. Glad to hear everything turned out all right. "

" Just last month I was checking out at Safeway and watched a guy walk out without paying with a basket of stuff...

I pointed it out to the checker, and was told that it's their policy not to touch anyone or then can get sued... He said he'd get fired if he tried to stop him... Didn't even clal the cops because the perp would be gone before they showed up...

Maybe I should fill my basket there, and wave bye-bye as I walk out the door... ;-) "

" good job to the guards, however be careful, you don't want to be tried for murder for doing your job... "

" Uh. Security guys aren't cops. They can be sued for assault. "

" Dwayne:

It is unfortunate, but too true. My husband has been in the grocery business for 21 years, on the night shift in sweet, swanky Sonoma for 12 of those years, and he has seen his share of these types of incidents. The worst perps are the kids trying to steal alcohol, but they do come in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and ages. Because of the grocery chains' policies, I was actually surprised to hear about this; I assumed Wal-Mart had the same rules. I sincerely hope that the guard does not lose his job over this, that would be a shame. "

" To Sickothis: The penal code states a person can use whatever force is reasonable to affect a citizen's arrest. The security guards were in the right and were within the law to use reasonable force on someone they were placing under citizen's arrest. Target in Napa uses the same policy with their security officers. But they also know to let someone go if there is a danger to themselves or the public. "

" Nice going, Dwayne. I bet shoplifting at Safeway increases as a result of your comment! As to the security guys facing a law suit- if I was on their jury and the shoplifter ended up with a bloody lip, to bad, so sad, you asked for it. "

" In regards to the security guards possibly getting sued for tackling the man down. Last week my husband had to tackle a man down who was running from the Fairfield mall security. My husband had to tackle him to stop him from running. Once he was re detained the police came and we asked the police officer if my husband or the security guards had done anything wrong since the man was claiming that he had "head trauma" And the police officer said and I quote "No, you need to use as much force necessary to detain them. Its a form of citizens arrest." "

" Amazed- Yeah I thought they had a police sub-station there over the holidays too? Maybe they got rid of it. Considering all the crime and foreclosures in AmCan, be a good idea to keep a substation down around there. "

" Hurray for security!! 'bout time somebody did something against the bad guys. Hey just be careful though, it ain't worth getting hurt if these thugs carry deadly weapons. Install better cameras so the store can display their pictures on the board on the act of stealing. And security should have portable video cameras at the ready so they can document altercations outside of the store. This will help the authorities see the event as it happens. Same thing cops do on those cop shows. Good job guys. "
