Ripken-Babe Ruth League registration
The Napa Cal Ripken-Babe Ruth League baseball program sign-ups for spring 2009 will be held Jan. 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Replay Sports in Napa.
There will also be separate sign-up sessions Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Jan. 28 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a registration Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Registration dates will follow on Feb. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Players league ages are based on their age on April 30, 2009.
Cost for Rookies (ages 6 to 8 years) is $95. Minors (ages 9 to 10) costs $135. Majors (ages 11 and 12) are $135. The fee for players 13 to 15 years of age is $200.
Rookies and Minors play on 60-foot bases. Majors play on 70-foot bases, while the players 13 to 18 play on a regulation-sized baseball diamond.

Register now for NVC Physical Education classes
Spring semester starts Jan. 21 at Napa Valley College. Registration is in progress for a variety of physical education classes for career training, to prepare to transfer or to help meet personal fitness goals. There are still openings in instructor Judy Heys’ Life Guard Training and Water Safety Instruction classes (PHYE 204 and 205), Michelle Hobbs’ Coaching Administration course (PHYE 200), Celeste Carducci and Susan Diecke’s Foundations of Physical Fitness course (PHYE 255), and Jose Hurtado’s Critical Issues for Student Athletes (PHYE 298). Several new dance classes are also offered by instructors Kelly McCann, Ann Yates, Pam Rogers and Marci Sanchez including Dance Styles, Cardio-Salsa (based on the very popular ZUMBA dance-fitness workout), Ballet, Ballet Fit, Salsa and Latin Dance, Jazz Dance, Tap Dance and Modern Dance.

Youth basketball league deadline near
The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a winter youth basketball league, to be held at Redwood Middle School, Harvest Middle School, Napa and Vintage High Schools.
The program is set up so that boys and girls, ages 7 to 12.
Each team consists of 10 players of the same age group to ensure equal playing time for everyone. Each team practices one hour per week, one day a week, between Monday and Friday, at a school to be announced. Practices will begin the week of Jan. 19 and games will start Jan. 31.
Volunteer coaches are always needed and should sign up early for the greatest selection of practice times.

Napa Golf Course plans clinic have started
The Napa Golf Course will be offering Saturdays couples classes that started Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. There will be five weeks of instruction with a fee of $150 per couple. The class will be limited to eight students. The course is also offering a women’s clinic that started on Jan. 11, at 10 a.m., with five weeks of instruction. Napa Valley Girls Fastpitch sign-ups today
Sign-ups for the 2009 Napa Valley Girls Fastpitch Association softball season — which plays its games at Napa Kiwanis Park — will be today and Wednesday at the Napa High School cafeteria, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The make-up date will be Jan. 23 at Round Table Pizza on Solano Avenue from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The Major Division is for girls age 13 through 16 and the Senior Division is fo girls age 16 through 18. Softball experience is not require; all girls are welcome and guaranteed to play. Fees for the 2009 season are $95 for the first and $75 for the second child in the same family.Practices start April 1 and games start in the middle of May and run through July 31. Napa Junior Girls’ Softball registration tonight
The Napa Junior Girls’ Softball League will be conducting registration during the month of January. The league is open to all girls in second through seventh grades. Yes, we are now accepting girls in second grade to join our league. Practices will begin in March and games will be played in April through June. The $95 registration fee includes a team shirt, photo package and awards. Partial scholarships are available. Players signing up for the first time will need to show proof of age with birth certificate.
Registration will be held at the Napa High School cafeteria on Jan. 13-14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and will continue on Jan. 17 in front of Office Depot on Soscol Avenue from 10 a.m. to noon. Napa Valley Express tryouts Saturday
Napa Valley Express Softball will be holding tryouts for their 10 & Under “A” team on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Vintage High School varsity field. Check in will begin at10:30 a.m. with evaluations to start at 11 a.m. Pitcher’s and catchers may be asked to stay after for a separate workout.
To reach Vintage, take Highway 29 North to the Trower Ave. exit. Turn right at Trower. Go to end of Trower Ave. Vintage High’s parking lot is on the right and the field is just past the parking lot.

Vintage boosters annual crab feed Saturday
The Vintage High Athletic Boosters will hold their 31st annual crab and pasta feed Jan. 17, 2009 starting at 6 p.m. at the Chardonnay Hall, Napa Expo.
Tickets are $50 each and available at Napa Community Bank, the Bank of Napa and the Vintage High School office.
Music will be supplied by the Brian Cline Band.

Community T-Ball sign-ups Jan. 20
Napa Community T-Ball, a beginning baseball program for boys and girls whose birthdays fall between July 1, 2000 and May 1, 2004, will be held at Replay Sports (598 Lincoln Ave.) in January, 2009.
Registration is Jan. 20 and 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., and Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Youths are asked to bring a $40 registration fee ($25 for each additional child). There is an additional $25 fee for late registration. The sign-up fee includes a T-shirt, hat, pictures and trophies.
New players need to bring a copy of their birth certificate. Emergency and doctor’s phone numbers are also required.
The season runs from April 18 to June 6.

Napa Valley Baseball Under-11 tryouts Jan. 25
Napa Valley Baseball Club will hold tryout for its Under-11 travel team Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. at Cleve Borman Field in Yountville. The team will attend three tournaments. Tournament dates are Feb. 14-16 in Tracy, March 7 in Manteca and March 27-28 in Gilbert, Ariz.

The Justin-Siena Crab & Pasta Feed, “Braves Crab Shack” will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 31in the Clark Gym on the school’s campus at 4026 Maher St. in Napa. This event is the annual fundraiser for the Justin-Siena athletics program, benefitting all sports teams at the school. All-you-can-eat crab and pasta, a no-host bar, live auction and dancing to the sounds of football coach Rich Cotruvo’s band are featured during the evening. Napa spirit squad youth clinic Jan. 23
The Napa Spiritleaders will be putting on their youth cheer and dance clinic on Jan. 23.
The theme is “High School Musical 3.”
Registration begins at 3:45 p.m. in the F-1 NHS Dance Studio. Please do not arrive before due to school traffic. Cost is $40 and includes pizza dinner and snacks.
Participants ages 5-14 will learn age appropriate cheer and dance routines to the music from the movie “High School Musical 3” and perform it at the halftime of a basketball game.
Participants should dress in jeans, tennis shoes, white, blue or yellow T-Shirt, hair up in a pony tail and no jewelry.
Performance time is at 6:30 p.m. in the Napa High School Messner gym.
Sign-out and presentation of award ribbons for all participants is at 6:45 p.m. in the gym.

Vintage High youth cheer, dance clinic Feb. 6
Vintage High School’s award-winning cheer and dance team is hosting a youth cheer-dance clinic on Feb. 6, 2009.

Camp participants will learn a routine to perform at Vintage’s home basketball game in February. At the clinic, participants receive personal instruction in cheer, dance, stunting and tumbling.
Pizza and juice will be provided. At halftime during the home junior varsity football game, all participants will be featured performers. Awards will be presented at the end of each clinic. Spirit wear and new VHS blankets ($30) will be available for purchase at the clinic.
Proceeds support the cheer-dance program. The cost is $35 per child per clinic/performance — $60 for both clinics. Game admission is included only for camp participants. Participants should dress in comfortable clothes, black sweats or pants and white top, athletic shoes with no jeans or jewelry.
Napa Valley Marathon March 1
Registration is under way for the 31st Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon, which is slated for March 1.

The marathon course runs along the Silverado Trail, from Calistoga, south to the finish line at Vintage High School in Napa.

Napa High needs badminton coach
Napa High School is looking for a varsity badminton coach for the 2009 season.

Vintage begins track fundraiser
The Vintage High track and field team will raise funds for equipment for their new facility for training and competition. Community members are invited to “adopt” a hurdle. For a donation, individuals will have their name placed on a hurdle and also receive a commemorative gift from the team.

Swim Team accepting new members
The Napa Valley Swim Team is accepting new members, ages 6-18, to all levels of its year-around competitive program.
Practices are held at the Napa Valley College pool with the swimmer’s schedule determined by level. Tryouts are conducted Fridays at 5 p.m. or by appointment.
Prospective members should be able to swim 25 yards of both freestyle and backstroke.

Napa High holds charity event
Napa High School invites residents to purchase a commemorative brick that will be installed alongside the walkway leading to the new track and sports fields.
Purchasing a “Forever Path” custom engraved brick will also Napa alumni or other residents to leave a legacy on campus and help fund track and field equipment and the Napa High School Sports Booster programs.

NVST sets high school program
The Napa Valley Swim Team is accepting members for its high school preparation group. The high school prep group is a three-month program geared toward preparing swimmers of all ability levels for the high school season.
Practices will be held at the Napa Valley College pool from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with additional optional training opportunities with the year-around program on Fridays and Saturdays.
The prep group costs a flat fee of $320 plus an annual registration fee of $75. There is no additional fundraising required for this group.
