NVC sets racquetball classes
Napa Valley College instructor Richard Bruns is offering one way to meet New Year’s resolutions in a fitness-productive way — racquetball.
“Racquetball is a fast-paced workout that combines balanced elements of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, and is unique because it’s fun,” Bruns said, adding that players can burn as much as 750 calories per hour depending on weight and intensity.
While racquetball is based on competition, players proceed and develop at their own pace according to their background and abilities. Most sign up because they are seeking a recreational way to stay fit. Bruns said that about five percent of his students have taken the game to the next level, tournament play, and collectively earned more than 300 trophies in the last 20 years.
“It’s also played indoors out of the rain and cold, an excellent way to exercise in the winter months,” added Bruns, a certified American Professional Racquetball Association teaching pro.
The class, PHYE 118, Racquetball, SYN# 51437, will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 21. The racquetball class is 1.5 units and at $20/unit, cheaper than paying dues at a fitness club, according to Bruns. All equipment is provided. The class transfers to CSU and UC.
Walk-in registration begins Tuesday, Jan. 6. Bruns said the class typically fills up quickly.
