As we finalize 2008 and move into 2009 we wanted to reflect for a moment on 2008. The year 2008 was a difficult year for many due to economic uncertainty and political turmoil, and the unknown of what we may all expect in the new year. We look around and it feels as if our culture, our political processes, our country, our businesses and our personal lives may be on the cusp of what could be catastrophic events that are beyond our control.

America is now entering upon an era of government by the Democratic Party. Barack Obama will be our president for at least the next four years, possibly eight. The Democrats will control both Houses of Congress for at least the next two years, and quite possibly four or more. The Republicans are doomed, therefore, to be the minority party for some time to come. How should they conduct themselves?

These are my favorite books for this year, in no particular order. I have my own particular standards, which include the fact that I hardly read fiction any more so these are all non fiction. Also, they may not have original publishing dates of 2008 but are all recent and I read them myself this year.
