NOTES AND QUOTES for a New Year’s Day in the Napa Valley:

Justin Clayton was named second-team defense and two other Justin-Siena High School players, Eddie Aguayo and Daniel Pardini, were chosen honorable mention on the San Francisco Chronicle’s All-Metro football team, which was announced Sunday.
Clayton starred as a strong-side defensive end/outside linebacker for the Braves (9-4), who won the CIF North Coast Section Division IV title. The Napa County Defensive Player of the Year and Marin County Athletic League Lineman of the Year has verbally committed to Washington State and will sign a national letter-of-intent with the Cougars in early February.

He becomes the first Justin-Siena football player to receive an NCAA Division I scholarship. Clayton was listed as an All-Farwest prospect by SuperPrep at defensive end. He was also recognized in SuperPrep’s preseason football publication and was grouped with players from California, Nevada and Hawaii.
Aguayo (quarterback) and Pardini (running back) were named to the North Bay Honorable Mention list.

Justin-Siena is No. 15 in the final CalHiSports.com Div. IV state rankings.
The Braves are also listed 10th in the final CIF State Bowl Game Division III North Rankings, according to CalHiSports.

Centennial-Corona (15-0) was named as the State Team of the Year by CalHiSports.

Vintage High boys golf coach Jim Costan and two of his players, Brandon Duncan and Alex Peterson, will be the guests of the “KVON Sportsvine” Saturday.

The Crushers’ season, a spring sport, starts in early February.

The hour-long show starts at 9 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM and is hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod.

——

Eric Branagan-Franco of the Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo men’s soccer team was named to the All-Big West Academic Team.

To be eligible for consideration, the student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better, played in at least 50 percent of their team’s games, and completed one year at their current school.

Branagan-Franco, a Napa High graduate, closed out his Mustang career with eight school records, co-Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honors and selection to the All-Big West First-Team and National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Far West Region Second Team.

He was a major contributor to a Cal Poly squad that reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995 and won its first tournament match in the program’s 15 years at the Division I level, a 1-0 decision at UCLA on Nov. 21.

As a junior, he continued to rewrite the school record book for keepers with a .781 save percentage and nine shutouts. Branagan-Franco also set the new mark for career shutouts with 16.

Branagan-Franco graduated in December with a degree in kinesiology.

He was a three-year starter for Napa and the 2003 All-Napa County Player of the Year.

Folsom quarterback David Graves, who passed for 2,771 yards and 40 touchdowns while leading the Bulldogs into the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I football playoffs, was named as The Sacramento Bee’s All-Metro Player of the Year.

Graves also ran for 696 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

In a wild shootout in November, Graves completed 15 of 24 passes for 251 yards and five TDs in a 45-42 loss to Napa in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin playoffs at Memorial Stadium.

Graves has made a verbal commitment to the University of Nevada.

The Sacramento Bee named Mike Alberghini of Grant-Sacramento as its All-Metro Coach of the Year for football.

The Pacers (14-0) were the only Northern California school to come away with a win in the CIF State Football Championship bowl games in Carson.

Grant won the open division game, defeating Poly-Long Beach, 25-20, on a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.
