NewCheryl Forberg, the nutritionist to NBC's hit show "Biggest Loser," writes a monthly column for the Register on eating right, offering ways to improve your overall health through better eating habits and providing great recipes.

Forberg, a Napa Valley resident, has been the inspiration for many people to take on the challenge of improving their health and their eating habits since her column started here early in 2008.
What we are thinking of is adding a few other people who would write healthy lifestyle-related columns that, when offered as additions on the weeks before and after Cheryl's columns, would make up an entire getting healthy and getting fit component for our readers.

Since most all of us come up with New Years resolutions each year, what better time to look at offering this than at the start of 2009 with Napa's Resolution to Lose Big.
The columns would run every Monday, offering tips on general fitness, health issues and more, all with a goal of helping you reach your goal of carrying less weight and being in better condition in '09 than you were in '08.

One of the contributors is Brian Curtis PT, owner of Curtis Physical Therapy, located within Exertec Health and Fitness Club in Napa. Brian is a state licensed Physical Therapist with more than 25 years of experience treating orthopedic-type injuries, including spine, shoulder, knee and ankle problems.
He is personally actively involved in exercise and is an avid cycling enthusiast. He also regularly works out with weights and general exercises to maintain health. This lifestyle of healthy awareness is incorporated into his profession as he tries to infuse his passion for exercise into the lifestyles of his patients.

If you are game for this, so are we. The columns each Monday can be that week's starting point to keep you motivated ... you can even sign up to be part of the online group with a Resolution to Lose Big ... and we will do this from January through May for everyone who is interested.

Use the story comments section below this to let me know if this sounds like something you would be interested in reading and/or participating in.

" I'm in,..... I'd like to be part of the online group to Lose Big.

We aren't big enough for the biggest loser show,..... but we could all shed 25 or more pounds in this family. As the Mom, I'd like to have more motivation and recipes to serve the family that is healthy.

P.S. I'm so glad the Vicki didn't win Biggest Loser "

" I would be interested in participating in this. I have lost 30 punds since Sept. 2007 and I am working on another 30. All my excercising takes place in my home or in one of Napa County's great parks (Alston and Skyline particularly). My focus this year is to further incorporate Napa's parks/open spaces into my workout routine. It's a great way to see what Napa has to offer in addition to the wineries and get outside and breathe. "

" I am so there! I really need a kick in the butt and I need the motivation.

I struggle with my weight and really need to be accountable to others. You can give up alcohol, you can give up smoking, you can give up partying, but you can't give up food. Well, you can...in moderation. I need some help with this!

Since I can't afford top-notch assistance, this would be so great! "

" Count me in! I think a great addition to the columns would be how to be fit and stay fit in this high stress world where, finding the time to workout an hour a day is a difficult thing to find. Most people that I know work 8-12 hours a day (including myself) and rarely have the opportunity to find the little time it takes to be healthy. I think finding solutions to this issue would be lovely. I would enjoy participating in a challenge along with other Napans where we do a kind of 'make over- get fit-shed pounds program'. I would also like to see a column or have suggestions thrown out there on how to eat healthy when you are on the go and don't have times to prepare meals at home.... "

" This might be interesting but I would like to see columns from ordinary people not in the "fitness" field.

Kaiser is providing a class starting in January that asks the main question, "I know what to do, WHY dont I just do it?!"

That's what I want to read. If I was writing the column, I would share the day to day choices that people endure, especially those that have had a weight problem for many years and how to make the life style changes needed when juggling daily life when it is not your profession or even remotely part of your lifestyle. Tricks to keep motivated and make it truly a lifestyle change not just another "diet"

I am a prime example of the above example -- i have years of experience learning all that I could possibly need but just dont do it for any significant length of time.

Like Proud Daughter says,"You can't give up food!" and you are trying to change more than one thing at a time, eating habits, exercise habits, AND the emotions that surround food.

I hope this idea turns out to be what the paper envisions. I want the answer the question, Why dont I just do it and have real life experiences to share that answer. "

" Napa weight coalition should help out as well. Way too many people are overwieght in this town. Stop watching your kids be active in sports and get up and be active yourself. Set good examples for our future generations...there are plenty of outdoor facilities to help you lose the weight, no expensive gym membership neccesary. One last thing, stop drinking diet coke- it slows your metabolism...most people that I know that drink diet coke are atleast 20 pounds over wieght. Get Fit Napa Valley "

" I so need this in my life. That little bit of support that can help me with my "Drug of Choice, FOOD".
Yes, I lack self esteem and motivation. Given a chance, this may be all it takes to help lift my spirits and possibly get that "little look" from my Bride, that say, "Wow, you are a Sexy Man". "

I need support from others who are trying to lose weight. We can all share our experiences together and not feel along in our quest. "

" I am currently part of a program for employees only at Kaiser Marin called The Biggest Challenge. They have taken 12 employees who want to change their life through healthy eating and being active lifestyle. the program is sponsored through our Employee Wellness Department it offers nutritional support, health coaching and we as a group of all different ranges of activity level meet once a week at local school tracks or hiking trails. I have learned how to exercise at home, in my office, and outside. No expensive gym membership necessary. My only problem with the program is it's not close to home. I would love to make a connection with a group in Napa to commit to workout together a few times a week. We even bring our children this is a way to have a family come together to get healthy. Count me in Napa! "

" Last January my husband's family organized a "chub-off challenge". I lost 19 pounds in the 3 months. Accountability was critical to my success. It has slowly crept back on (14 pounds), partially due to stress eating, lack of exercise, and lack of accountability. The three critical pieces for me are plenty of water, plenty of fiber, and exercise. More fruits and veggies, less meat and sweets. I need to learn how to be accountable to myself ultimately. My goal would be 30 pounds of weight loss (I started on December 8), and being more fit. I would love to accomplish this by my birthday in March, which is an ambitious goal. "

We are going to balance it out by having the story comments where people can talk about how they are doing, what challenges they face, what is working for them and what is not.
The comments can be that open forum for non-fitness folks to have an online support group to help reach common goals. "

" elizavetika:
Check out Cherylk Forberg's column where she addresses some of what you bring up. She is the nutritionist for Biggest Loser, lives in the Napa Valley, and offers a monthly nutrition column that is based in common sense approaches to everyday challenges.
Her recipes are also things we can all do easily at our own homes, down to the fact she picks up all the ingredients at Vallergas Markets, showing we can even get everything in our own back yards. "

actually starting on Sat. 12/20/08 with a buddy of mine.. going to push each other.
I have been reading alot lately "prepping" myself for this and the one common thread I have found is to set ACHIEVABLE small goals upfront with a MAIN goal at a determined date.

My main goal: 50 lbs by April 20th
12.5 lbs/month!

Come on, we can all do it..... this would be a cool place to come and read when you get that feeling of.... "i know I need to go work-out/exercise now, but I just don't feel like it"....... read some words of inspiration and go do it!

Plus, I need some recipes... I don't eat right "

I stayed in pretty good shape as a teen and through college by playing sports and walking everywhere but now my lifestyle isn't as active. I love experimenting to find healthy versions of our favorite (but not so healthy) foods. I also would be interested in finding meathods of exercise that are more interesting than going to the gym. this is not a competition among the participants. If any incentives are offered, there will be a random draw of the participants.
Watch for more announcements coming early next week and again after the holidays.

I was an incredibly fit mom when I became pregnant with my second (and last) child. Now, over 11 years later--umm... well let's just say that I would not be able to keep up a jog at Alston, and my walk would likely not be brisk for long! :) So: To those who want to come on out for a fitness excursion (per funnyme's suggestion) and would like some company at the back of the pack, come help me bring up the rear, and together, we can "BRING UP OUR REARS!!" 3 cheers for support, camaraderie, and accountability!
