It looked like a destruction derby at a key south county intersection Thursday afternoon, with four vehicles smashed together and one resting on its top.

The crash happened around noon where highways 29 and 221 meet, police said. Highway 221 becomes Soscol Avenue north of Imola Avenue.
Maria Rodriguez, 42, of Napa was northbound on Highway 29 in her Ford Expedition.

As she drove through the intersection with Highway 221 her SUV was hit by a Toyota driven by Barbara Glover, 39, of Sacramento.
Glover was southbound on Highway 221. “It appears she ran the red light and hit the SUV,” California Highway Patrol Officer Jaret Paulson said.

The SUV rolled, landing on its top. The impact sent the Toyota crashing into a Jeep driven by Jenal Ramoshorder, 40, of Vallejo and a Nissan, driven by Rondell Cornelson, 18, of Vallejo.
Both the Jeep and Nissan were stopped southbound on Highway 221, Paulson said.

Rodriguez, Glover and her passenger, Eric Edmeston, 12, of Sacramento, complained of pain and were taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

Napa Fire Capt. Donnie Johnson said when firefighters arrived all of the victims had gotten out of the vehicles by themselves.

Although traffic was heavy at the time of the accident, the only impact was on motorists heading north on Highway 221 from Soscol Ferry Road.

" When, when WHEN is the freaking red-light running going to stop?!!?? Why can't people understand that these lights & rules are there to protect us & that when they ignore them, they put themselves & others in SO much danger? UGH!! "

" My thoughts are also with the families, hope evryone is well. Incidently, kudos to the responsiveness of the Register editoial staff! I was just reading an article earlier about this very same intersection and people were whining about no map. And here we have one on the very same day! And people say you guys don't listen..... "

That's exactly why the map in this case, since people seemed to not know 221 exists. We will do more maps with crash sites, fires, etc. in the future to help the geographically challenged ... like me!

" I drove by this just as the ambulance passed me. The SUV was pretty much sitting atop the Nissan. The whole driver wheel assembly was missing from the vehicle and an indentation in the front of the Nissan was an obvious sign of where the wheel hit.

It almost looks like the SUV was tall enough to ramp over the Nissan Monster Truck style, but ended up on the roof.

Do they have a camera at that intersection, I forget?

The worst part was I pulled over for the ambulance and this MBZ driver passes me and doesn't get out of the way for the Ambulance. I tell you some people just don't belong on the roads! "

" All it takes is a little paying attention and not thinking you're immune to these kinds of things, and things like this can be stopped! With that said, I hope the people involved in this are ok; my thoughts and prayers are with them. "

" Many years ago, my father was involved in a serious accident at the intersection. It had been raining that day, and the man driving the truck that hit him ran the red light, skidded across the intersection and hit him head on. I think of that every time I go through that intersection. I even look both ways to see that cross traffic has stopped before I proceed through a newly green light.

How about installing some red light cameras there? There are several different intersections around town that could use them, in my opinion. I'm sure that a few pricey tickets to red light violators will make that intersection a little bit safer. "

" People mostly think about the pocketbook. There should be more cameras on intersections to record red lights and speeding. This would stop it cold. "

" May the families involved be alright.

I used to jump out in that intersection once the light turned green (221 turning left onto 29 northbound), but I'm a changed person after I hesitated one morning and a limo blasted through the red light going southbound on 29. Scared me straight!

This would be a perfect interesection for cameras! "

Too bad people are in such a hurry or not paying attention that they run red lights and put other drivers in danger. "

" Cameras, of course, cameras at 29/221 and 29/121. Big rigs and passenger vehicles blow through newly red lights at 29/121 a LOT. "

" This is awful - but I am not surprised. Doubled caution seems to be needed out on the roadways (and in car parks) right now. I was on a big jaunt yesterday and it was nerve wracking. People are driving like lunatics, weaving at high speeds on the freeways and pulling out dangerously on smaller roads. It is those huge 'to do' lists that are so distracting, 'tis the Season. "
