NOTES AND QUOTES for a Monday in the Napa Valley:

Ryan Kostecka, a sophomore wide receiver for Lewis & Clark College of Portland, Ore., was named to the All-Northwest Conference Offensive Honorable Mention list for football.
Kostecka, a Napa High School graduate, was one of nine Pioneers who made the team. The selections are voted upon by conference coaches.

He was second for Lewis & Clark in receiving with 30 catches totaling 631 yards, a 21.0-yard average, and three touchdowns. Kostecka averaged 70.1 yards per game.
He also rushed for 20 yards on four carries and was second for the Pioneers in all purpose yards.

Kostecka handled some of the punting duties as well and averaged 31.0 yards on nine punts.

Jessica Ponce, a six-time national champion, and Napa County Sheriff’s Dept. Sgt. Oscar Ortiz, the boxing coach for the Sheriff’s Activities League, are my guests in December on Napa Community Public Access TV-Channel 28.

Ponce, a Napa High senior, won a title at the 34th U.S. PAL Boxing Tournament in October. Ponce has also earned a berth in the USA Boxing National Championships in June 2009 in Colorado.

The half-hour show, “Register Sports with Marty James,” airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. and Mondays at noon.

The San Francisco State men’s basketball team is off to a 5-0 start, and Ryan Wessels of Napa has had something to do with the Gators’ early-season success.

Wessels played very well in the Cal State Monterey Bay Classic in Seaside over the weekend.

In Friday’s 71-67 win over Concordia University, Wessels had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and four rebounds in 13 minutes.

Wessels had nine points, going 7-for-8 at the free-throw line, and also six rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes in Saturday’s 70-65 win over Seattle Pacific University.

Ryan Galovic of Napa started at roverback on the Weber State defense and had three total tackles as the Wildcats beat Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo Saturday in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, 49-35.

Several NFL players with Bay Area ties are among the 25 modern-era semifinalists being considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009. The Hall of Fame’s Board of Selectors chose the semifinalists from the recently announced list of 133 preliminary nominees.

Roger Craig (San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Raiders running back), Richard Dent (49ers defensive end), Chris Doleman (49ers defensive end/linbacker), Kevin Greene (49ers linebacker/defensive end), Ray Guy (Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders punter), Charles Haley (49ers defensive end/linebacker), Lester Hayes (Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders cornerback), Ken Stabler (Oakland Raiders quarterback), and Rod Woodson (49ers, Raiders cornerback/safety) are all on the list.

To be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a nominated player or coach must have been retired at least five years.

Although there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s current ground rules do stipulate that between four and seven new members will be selected each year.

The Class of 2009 will be determined at the selection committee’s annual meeting on Jan. 31, 2009, in Tampa, Fla., the day before Super Bowl XLIII. The election results are announced immediately following the meeting at a press conference at the Super Bowl media headquarters.
