5:30 p.m.A solo crash Monday morning in the Carneros district closed Duhig Road for at least eight hours.

Around 8 a.m., Hugo Higuera, 18, of San Rafael was driving on Duhig Road near Ramal Road, when he took a curve on the roadway at an unsafe speed, California Highway Patrol Officer Jaret Paulson said.
Higuera slammed his Honda Civic into the “only power pole in sight, shearing it off at the bottom,” Paulson said.

Higuera was not hurt.
As of 3 p.m., Monday, Duhig Road was still closed as crews replaced the power pole, Paulson said.

Higuera was cited for not having a valid driver’s license or insurance, Paulson said.
The number of PG&E customers affected by the loss of the power pole was not available, according to a PG&E spokeswoman.

" Yet another crash due to speeding. Why won't people learn to SLOW DOWN? Then stuff like this won't happen (or at least, won't happen as often). "

" I sure wish they would have done a little more then just cited him. "

" Hey, Greg- I'm sure they did more than cite him. I'll bet they towed his car, too.

That'll teach him. "

" We have had a rash of those terrorist power poles, jumping out in front of cars like that . . . "

" reason-ator - If the car is totalled like I think it is after hitting a power pole, then he won't reclaim it. If this is the case, then county is stuck getting rid of a heap of metal and metal prices are down. Taxpayers end up footing this bill! "

" Hmmm...I wonder why he didn't have a valid license or insurance. It is a mystery. "

" No mystery "cfpotter". Maybe he doesn't trust insurance companies. Maybe he's from another planet. Maybe he didn't know he's supposed to have a drivers license. I wouldn't know that if I was from Mars. "

" When I drove down to Mexico from San Diego, it was made VERY clear to me that I needed to have Mexican Auto Insurance, so I bought a short-term policy. Of course, my car was also legally registered and I had a valid license since I am a (mostly) law abiding citizen. Either you care about following laws or you don't. "

" No its not a mystery! He does not need it to drive, legally or not. Maybe his name was Hugo today and will be something else the next time he drives and wrecks the car. If he did not have a valid form of ID then how do we really know what his name is. I dont think this is any different then the check into a hospital, give a name, get treated, leave and do it all over again next month or year but never pay for it. "
