NOTES AND QUOTES for a Wednesday in the Napa Valley:

Napa High School’s Monticello Empire League champion football team continues preparations for this week’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinal-round playoff game with a Thanksgiving Day practice from 9-11 a.m. at Napa Memorial Stadium. It’s an open practice, in which the public is invited.
Napa (10-1) takes a nine-game winning streak into Friday’s game here against Laguna Creek-Elk Grove (8-3). It’s a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

In other games Friday, it’s Nevada Union-Grass Valley (10-1) against Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove (9-2) at Monterey Trail-Elk Grove, Johansen-Modesto (8-3) against Merced (10-1) at Merced College, and St. Mary’s-Stockton (9-2) at Lincoln-Stockton (10-1).
The semifinals are Dec. 5 at home sites and the championship game is Dec. 13 at University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Justin-Siena has a 9 a.m. practice Thursday as well. The Braves (7-4) are the No. 4 seed and will make the five-hour trip north Saturday to top-seeded Ferndale (11-0) for a CIF North Coast Section Division IV playoff game. It’s a 1 p.m. kickoff at Ferndale High.

Scott Kostecka and Stephanie Raymond, Napa High’s co-coaches for volleyball, will be the guests of the “KVON Sportsvine” Saturday. The hour-long show starts at 9 a.m. on KVON-1440 AM and is hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod.

Napa won the Monticello Empire League title and advanced to the Northern California Division I CIF State Championships.

The Napa Raiders youth football and cheer program will take part in the annual Napa downtown Christmas Parade Saturday. The parade starts at 5 p.m. from First and School streets.

Taking in last week’s St. Patrick/St. Vincent-Vallejo vs. Justin-Siena CIF North Coast Section Division IV playoff game at Dodd Stadium was Dave Shipp.

Shipp is the athletic director at Vintage, but started out his head coaching career at St. Pat’s and later coached at Justin-Siena, leading very successful teams at both schools.

He is also a former Vintage football coach.

Ryan Wessels of Napa had nine points and four rebounds in 16 minutes as the San Francisco State men’s basketball team beat Menlo College, 79-52, in the first round of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic in Rohnert Park last week.

The Gators went on to win the tournament title, beating Northwest Nazarene in the finals of the preseason tournament, 87-73.

———

Kyleigh McAhren had three kills for the Bucknell University volleyball team in a 3-0 loss to American in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament in Washington, D.C.

McAhren, a freshman, was a multiple-sport athlete at Justin-Siena and is from Napa.

Butte College-Oroville (11-0) is No. 3 and Santa Rosa JC (8-3) is 14th in this week’s JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 national junior college football rankings.

Butte, which has Justin-Siena graduate Chris Meyer at linebacker, secured its spot in the California state title game over the weekend with a 24-20 victory at No. 15 Reedley.

The Roadrunners won the Northern California Conference championship.

Butte has beaten six teams ranked in the top-30 during the season.

" As a Napa High graduate in 1975, I am of course proud of the Indian's last few years of success and plan to be at the practice Thankgiving morning. I am torn because I would love to go see Justin's game against Ferndale, as a Napa resident proud again of our student's success at other schools. Ferndale is a great community and anyone that can make the trip to support the Brave's are urged to do so. Try eating at Curley's resturaunt in Ferndale before the game for lunch or after for dinner. Great food and people. Good luck to all our youth sports this weekend and beyond..
