The Maxwell Bridge curves while a straight bridge over the Napa River would be the shortest, simplest connection. I’d ask Caltrans, but since you earn a living doing this, why don’t you?
Well, aren’t you sassy. That’s great. I can appreciate sassy and classy but not — well, never mind that. Let’s keep it professional.
I’m not a Napa native and I have been here for a mere three years. So, when this question was submitted, I scratched my head trying to figure out which bridge this reader was talking about. The Maxwell Bridge — which, according to a 2007 Register article, won “Project of the Year” from the California Transportation Foundation — is the Imola Avenue bridge over the Napa River.
I do, however, remember from visits to Napa in 2000 the old Maxwell Bridge — green, metal, straight, and low to the waterline so it had to be opened to let maritime traffic through — though I didn’t know its name.
I thank you readers for submitting these questions. Because of you, I get to learn new things about this wonderful community that I live in that I probably would never have known about nor bothered to ask on my own because I’m too lazy/busy/unfocused (or all of the above?) to ask.
Back to the question. Marcus Wagner, Caltrans’ public information officer for Napa County, answered with one simple word: “leverage.” What did he mean? Leverage is defined as the mechanical advantage gained by the action of a lever. Also, thinking back on documentaries I viewed on either the Bay Bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge, I remember that they talked about bridges being curved so that they could sway naturally in the event of an earthquake. These curves are called fragility curves. According to information I found on the Mid-America Earthquake Center’s Web site, a fragility curve “represents the relationship between the intensity of a seismic event and the vulnerability of the structure.”
So the bridge curves in order that it may sway, as needed.
Here’s my question: How much shorter or simpler could the connection be without the curve? You can only go so fast on the bridge anyway — 35 mph, not 50 mph, like some drivers do — so whether it’s there or not wouldn’t be of much significance in getting you from Point A to Point B.
Better safe than sorry, I always say.
