A Calistoga man ended up in the Napa County jail on Monday night after his car crashed into a motorcycle, injuring the driver and leaving the scene of the accident, police said.

The crash happened on Highway 29, south of St. Helena.
Sergio Juerta Madrigal fled the scene but was found in a motel parking lot a short distance from the accident, police said.

Witnesses identified him as the hit-and-run driver, St. Helena Police Cpl. Ramon Jovel said.
Jovel said when the officer stopped Madrigal in the parking lot, he detected alcohol on his breath. Madrigal was also found to be in possession of cocaine, Jovel said.

The 57-year-old Calistoga man who was driving the motorcycle was hurt, but Jovel did not know the extent of the injuries.
Madrigal, 40, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, hit and run, possession of cocaine, driving without a valid license and violation of probation.

ok, suspicion of felony DUI, I get that (until the tests come back) and suspicion of hit & run, I get that (maybe the witness is mistaken) and suspicion of cocaine, I get that (althought the tests may show it to be meth - or baking soda, who knows?)

But this I do NOT get: he was released even though he had no valid license and was violating probation?

Isn't this the kind of story that ends in the future with people not being able to understand why this guy is on the streets to commit some crime or another when law enforcement had a chance to lock him up.?

Just askin' "

" Are they both from Calistoga? And what has happened to this 57 year old man? Who is he, and how's he doing?
Did the hit & run suspect get released?
Just want to know! "

" I would sincerely hope that the probation violator...and alleged hit & run, controlled substance, dui suspect... is being held without bail. Seems obvious to this lay person, but the legal system may say otherwise. NVR, we would all love to have followup on this.
How about it?? "

" Sounds like a model citizen, just a few infractions. No suprise that it was a hit and run, that's the basic reaction now for this group. "
