McAhren key to Bucknell volleyball win

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

With freshman Kyleigh McAhren of Napa getting eight kills on a .636 attack percentage, two service aces and two blocks, the Bucknell women’s volleyball team clinched the final spot available for the Patriot League Tournament, defeating Lehigh, 3-0, at Davis Gym in Lewisburg, PA on Friday.
McAhren, a Justin-Siena High School graduate, had seven kills on a .294 hitting percentage and two blocks as Bucknell defeated Lafayette 3-1 on Saturday.

The Bison will join American, Army and Colgate in the tournament. Bucknell is back in action Nov. 21 when it heads to American to face the Eagles in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.

Ryan Galovic of Napa started at the roverback position on Weber State’s defense and made five total tackles (one solo, four assisted) as the Wildcats beat Idaho State, 59-27, to clinch at least a tie for the Big Sky Conference football title.

Jake Croxdale of Napa and Carlo Trinchero of St. Helena contributed to Cal State Sacramento’s 45-25 Big Sky Conference victory over Northern Colorado in front of 10,567 fans at Hornet Stadium on Saturday.

Croxdale ran for 19 yards on three carries and Trinchero had three total tackles, two of which were unassisted.

The victory improved the Hornets’ record to 6-5 overall and assured the team of a non-losing season for the first time since 2000.

Jocelyn Phillips swam well for the Florida State women’s swimming and diving team in a meet Saturday against Penn State and Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.

The Vintage graduate placed third in the 200-yard freestyle, sixth in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Phillips also swam on Florida State’s second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team and fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Santa Rosa Junior College (7-3) is No. 17 in this week’s JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 national junior college football rankings.

Butte-Oroville (10-0) moved up to No. 3 in the poll this week following a dominating 33-7 win over Foothill..

The Roadrunners, who have Justin-Siena graduate Chris Meyer at linebacker, will take on Reedley College in the Northern California title game this weekend at Reedley.

In preparation for the highly anticipated return of the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling road race in February 2009, a specially developed classroom curriculum has been developed for fourth- through sixth-grade students. The educational handbook will be distributed to schools in the 16 California cities that will host the 2009 Amgen Tour of California.

The event’s fourth running is scheduled for Feb. 14-22, 2009, and will showcase some of the world’s top professional cycling teams. 

The handbook will teach students about the history of cycling and includes bike safety and maintenance tips.  Provided to more than 60,000 students, the booklet also provides information about the State of California, including targeted lesson plans that use cycling as a means to teach core subjects.

The 2009 Amgen Tour of California will visit 16 host cities. Among host cities for the nine stages are: Sacramento, Davis, Santa Rosa, Sausalito, Santa Cruz.
