Hope for our future

Dear editor, As I sat and listened to the acceptance speech of president-elect Barack Obama, I was reminded that four years ago at the Democratic National Convention when he spoke, I hoped this young black man would one day run for president. Little did I know that one day it would be true and that I would live to see it happen.

I felt the pride of those millions of people on television that were cheering and crying for him.
I now feel that the future of our country is once again on the right path and that my grandchildren and great-grandchildren will have a better future. As Obama said, it won’t happen in a year and maybe not in one term. But it will happen.

May the Lord be with him and with all those who hold the future of our country in their hands.

" Couldn't have said it better myself.

I cried from the overwhelming pride I felt for my country when I watched Obama get the electoral votes he needed to win.

Now it's time for us to put aside politics and come together for the common food of this great country. Divided we fall, but together we stand.

Yes we can! "

" Was this an election or a glorified edition of American Idol? BO is a do-nothing radical senator that wouldn’t have had a snowball’s chance in Palm Springs if he hadn’t been black and cool…IMHO. Desperate, misguided people will often choose style over substance, wonderful public speakers instead of the hard-edged, medicine-slinging leadership they really need. And to all of you Republicans out there that think I’m with you, forget it. The main reason we have Obama for the next four years is because of Bush’s horrid job of remaining true to ANY of the conservative principles that could have helped our country avoid the mess we’re in now. And in all honesty, McCain would probably not have done much better. Is this really the best we can do? Unlike the malcontents marching in protest yesterday over Prop 8, I do respect the democratic process and will support Obama’s Presidency out of respect to the office. But as far as swooning at the mention of his name or crisply raising my right hand in a “Hail Obama”…don’t hold your breath. "

" Well Vesta I guess that could be true if higher taxes, a worse economy, less National Security and more Government are your ideas of the "right path".

As for me, I will continue to criticize B.O.'s failed policies at every opportunity and I will do everything I can to avoid paying higher taxes and I will not surrender my Constitutional Rights! "

" Clearly Obama is on his honeymoon with America. All we have are campaign promises and it remains to be seen if he will turn sharply left and try to force socialism on us.

Obama will get his chance for two years to show if he can maintain a centrist position. With the Pelosi-Reid Congress I doubt it, but we shall see. If he does what Pelosi and Reid tell him to do or turns lefty on us, that will galvanize the opposition to make gains in Congress and force him to be moderate. Yes we can. It happened to Clinton and he benefitted because Dems talk about how 'moderate' Bill was. What they don't mention is that he had no choice.

It's always interesting when a party comes into dominant power they talk about working with the opposition. What they mean is no matter what the opposition says it won't make any difference.

One thing they want is to shut off free speech with their so-called 'fairness doctrine'. Right wing talk radio has been a thorn in their side and now they have the chance to make them shut up (the lefty standard response to anyone who disagrees with them). Amazingly, lefty talk radio failed miserably but the elitist left knows we need to be brainwashed. They're not satisfied that they have all the media except Fox in their peanut gallery. They want to shut off debate and inconvenient questions like they do in the schools. Here's a news flash for lefties: if you don't like it, change the station - there are lots of other choices.

BTW, I don't listen to right wing radio, but it would be wrong to let Pelosi and Reid scheme to bypass the First Amendment. "

" Glenroy - Here's some words with meaning for you and what it says about the people who spoke them and who they were speaking to is quite ugly.

“Liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God.” - GOP Rep. Robin Hayes

“We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation.” - GOP Gov. Sarah Palin

“What I would say -- what I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America? I think people would love to see an expose like that.” - GOP Rep. Michelle Bachman "

" Kevin - I am not surprised by your response to those disgusting comments, considering your views on this site. Please explain to the rest of us who the "real" Americans are, where they live, and who is going to determine judgment on them. I supposed you would nominate yourself for that position.

You, sir, are truly scary. "

You mean Obama being elected made you say that and shake your head, not the last 8 years of extremist right wing "governing" that has left our country a shell of what it once was.

Truly remarkable. "

I guess she means, the great nation of the past 8 years.

These people are incredible. They do fight 'til the very end though. "

" bauhausfan - extremist right wing governing? By who? W? I have never considered him or his father anywhere near hard core conservatism. They have their own brand of politics that takes policies and positions from whatever they want. Unfortunately many of their policies seem to be written by RINOs and Dem-wannabes, especially the expand big government and big brother and nanny state mentalities. The Republican party has sold itself out and deserves to go into the dustbin of history. A new coalition of true conservatives and libertarians needs to come forward to reclaim the real conservative positions.

Also let's get straight that we care more about the Constitution than those who subvert reality to their own beliefs. Of course, for lefties to even think they support the Constitution requires them to bend their reality - it must be very confusing for them. Most of the time they tell us that the Constitution is outdated and needs to be changed (usually when referring to the Second Amendment).

And face facts: Obama is a member of the far left wing of the Democrat party. That, and looking over his ambiguous acquaintances, pretty much makes him a radical. But he's been elected and we shall be watching him carefully. Yes, we can. (a catchphrase that is so rapidly becoming tiring). "

" GW Bush is by far one of the most modern liberal presidents. He is not right winged, nor is he a conservative. With the bail-out, he accomplished in a few weeks a move towards socialism that frightens most capitalists. Having said that, he isn't a radical, but hold on we have one in the queue.

Misfit: you are about ready to see that the past 8 years is nothing to what is coming our way. With the exception of 9-11, can you articulate what in the past 8 years has affected you as an individual in a negative manner? "
