Homeless shelter may not end up at fairgrounds
Jordan Lane site recommended for winter shelter

3 p.m.Instead of putting the winter homeless shelter at Napa Valley Exposition, Napa County has found a light industrial building on Jordan Lane that is better suited.

The county will ask the City Council Tuesday for permission to operate the winter shelter at 1098 Jordan Lane, behind Wal-Mart.
This empty industrial building has housed automotive and machining businesses over the years.

Last month, Napa Valley Expo’s board of directors approved leasing a fairgrounds building for a short-term shelter if the county could find no other location.
Jim Featherstone, the county’s assistant director of health and human services, told directors he would continue to look for an alternative location.

A winter shelter at the Expo might have conflicted with rentals of buildings to community groups, fair officials said.
The county is trying to open a shelter this month and run it through spring. The former location at Napa State Hospital is no longer available.

" isin't that close to the Social Services/job place? Isn't that a better place for people to access services anyway? "

" Shoplifting is going to be horrible if they do that, also be afraid to walk alone in the parking lot late at night.. It will be open season for snach and grabs! Scary. "

" The Alanoclub has been cosed for over a year now, there is a circus school there now (yes, circus) as far as the shoplifting goes I am confused as to how they are going to do that while locked in the building the entire time they are there ... and I believe it is downtonw where people are getting stabbed for no reason (as yet to be dteremined). all the services are downtown except the job connection and the people who go to the winter shelter aren't as a rule looking for work. I think you would complain if gold fell from the sky cause it hurt your lawn. "

" Great, now wal-mart will be new hang out spot for all the homeless people. Need I remind everyone of what it was
downtown when the shelter was kiddy-korner to the jail/courthouse building? What about all the "river rats" that would hang out by the creek and Mervyn's, now they will have wal-mart to smoke in front of, shoot heroin in the back parking lot, and dont forget the stench of fecies and urine..remember this is NOT the shelter that requires people to be clean and sober. Target here I come!! My weekly trip to wal-mart is almost unbearable now! "

" Great Place, and good God, give these people a break, not all are drug abusers and crooked! Whoever you are, contribute to this cause, the only people that can get in have to be CLEAN. If you have time go in and contribute to their well being and becoming a better member of society. There are too many people, especially now, that need your help. God Save Them All! "

" And what shower facilities etc. does this building have to service the homeless? Keep looking Napa....and yes Copia may be available to the highest bidder. Welcome to Wal-Mart after dark but before bedtime...and the beat goes on and on.....! "

" Good question where are the suitable shower and restroom facilities? Guess the shelter guests will have to go to walmart and procure some water wings by any means possible ,then stroll to the Napa River, down below the Lincoln St. bridge, and cleanup. Just hope they don,t pollute the steelhead fishing. "

" All you Reagan voters out there have him to thank for much of this as well as "Reagan economics" contributing to our sorry economic state.
And, mamawana, You are right on! Give these people a break. All you people do is sit on your asses and complain and point the finger at everyone else and you do NOTHING to contribute to solving any problems. All you do is hate...and judge...and complain. "

" Much better!! Good job Mr. Feather Stone and Mrs. Horton!! Won't have to set it up and tear it down every night. Won't bother bingo or anyone else.. PERFECT SPOT! To use the winter shelter you must first register and shower at the Hope center, so the building won't need showers, just Bathrooms... "

" That's a Good spot. Near the AA building with similar types & SImilar Programs and It's not like Wal-Mart attracts high class citizens. I haven't gone there since the grand opening week. It has been taken over.. But that building will not be near big enough for A Barrack Hussein presidency. The fairgrounds is about the perfect size and does have shower and cooking facilities! Why doesn't "Big Wine" or Big "Flood control" or Big Local Government & Big Tourism $'s pitch in!!I keep hearing how all that Money is so good for our community!!! "

" I'm a professional and have a good income. However, due to an illness some years ago I learned how close some of us really are to becoming homeless. I had less than $20 in the bank, had a mortgage to pay and had not worked in nearly a year due to the effects of my medical treatments. Friends told me where I could get a meal once a day at one of the local churches. One day a man came to the door offering to mow my lawn. He'd lost his job in the tech sector due to the economy, had some extra time on his hands, and noticed that my yard needed some attention. He figured I was sick or something and unable to do the work myself. He was right. He took care of my yard, and it turns out he was homeless. He'd been a community volunteer in the Sacramento area where he'd worked and wanted to stay busy while he was looking for another job. I gave him a little bit of money (I already had so little, I figured I wouldn't miss it). He was so kind, and aware that a lot of people judged him, "except for the other people in the shelter."
Due to a series of fortunate circumstances I didn't lose my home, my neighbors helped me keep the lights on, and I was able to return to my job within a couple of months.
I never forgot the kindness of that man who put aside his own despair to help me. His genuine concerns lifted me during a dark, dark time, and he'll never know what a lasting impact just one act of generosity had on my life. "

" Wow...bring on the Christmas Spirit Napans...You should all be ashamed of yourselves...Judging...Judging...Judging.

Just because your homeless does not make you a theft, drug addict or less of a person.

What about Mary and Joseph? They were homeless and asked for help.

Instead of complaining you should look into how you can help and give...Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all! "

" The Homeless Winter Shelter on Joran Lane is now offically squashed, not going to happen. City council has decided against it. As you reported there was complaints from the surrounding area. My personal opinion is that Wal Mart
complained. Now its back to square one! The county and all the others envolved are looking for a new location. If all else fails and weather turns bad it still may end up at the Fairgrounds... "
