Locals and tourists strolling through downtown Napa may have noticed posters plastered on power poles, walls of businesses and other conspicuous sites alerting the public to a $5,000 reward fund.
The reward, sponsored by Napa Downtown Merchants Association, Napa Chamber of Commerce, Property-Based Improvement District and the Napa Bed-and-Breakfast Association, has been posted in an effort to drum up information leading to the arrest of the young man who stabbed a 71-year-old man in front of a Main Street restaurant on Oct. 28.
The Napa man was knifed four times in the chest and back. None of the stab wounds were life threatening. The victim was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center that night, treated and released.
The victim told the Register earlier he was standing on the sidewalk in front of Downtown Joe’s when he thought someone was pushing him. As he realized he had been stabbed, his assailant ran north on Main Street and has not been captured.
Napa police say they believe the attack was random. They do not have any suspects, according to Napa Police Detective Don Winegar, who is investigating the case.
“We are hoping more witnesses will come forward to help us identify the suspect. We are following all the leads we receive,” Winegar said.
Downtown Joe’s owner Joe Peatman Jr. said the incident signals a problem for the community, not just downtown merchants.
“I believe it may be gang-related, like someone doing a violent act to get initiated into a gang,” Peatman said. “I don’t see any other motive. I don’t think the stabbing was to do bodily harm, but to get attention.”
Winegar said so far there is nothing to tie the stabbing to gang activity.
“We can assume a lot of things, but right now, there is no evidence to lead us to believe the attack was gang related. The suspect may also be mentally disturbed. That is another assumption were are checking out,” he said. “We are working with the county mental health department.’
Napa Downtown Association Director Craig Smith said he does not believe the stabbing should make people afraid to visit downtown Napa.
“Napa is a safe city. We hope by offering this reward someone who knows something will come forward and help police catch the person,” he said.
Joe Salerno, Property Based Improvement District board member, said the reward is meant to send a message to businesses and Napa residents that “we are behind the downtown merchants.
“We do not want these things to happen in downtown Napa or anywhere else. We are doing all we can to help police crack this case,” Salerno said, “Napa is a very safe city for town of its size, and we have a very strong police force. We are hoping this reward will generate some information that will help police arrest whoever is responsible for the stabbing. Random acts of violence are hard to track down.”
Napa Bed and Breakfast Association member Deborah Coffee said, “It is important for the association to contribute.”
“Napa is my home. I walk my dog in that area where the stabbing happened. We want our residents and tourists who come here to feel safe,” said Coffee, who owns the Inn on Randolph. “I want to feel confident my guests are safe when I recommend they patronize the businesses downtown.”
While focus turns to the arrest, the victim, who asked not to identified in fear of retaliation, said he has fully recovered from the attack.
“I’m still going downtown. As a matter of fact I was down there on Tuesday for the Veterans Day affair,” he said. “I certainly hope no one boycotts downtown. It was a random attack. It very well could have been a mentally disturbed person. I sure don’t want this to scare anyone away from going downtown. The police are doing a really great job patrolling the downtown area.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Det. Winegar at 258-7879.

Since the mayor is unwilling to step up to the plate and do her job,
I will personally contact Mr. Craig Smith to boost the reward another $1000 FOR the arrest and conviction of those responsible
We need to take out town back "

This is not some petulant kid trying to "get attention". This is some thug trying to cause bodily harm with a knife! What other motive is there for stabbing?
Enough with the excuses for violent crime downtown. "

I prefer to bash the leadership of the Police dept and the mayor for their failure to perform in a competent manner and for down playing the seriousness of these crimes.
It saddens me that there is not very much public outrage or knowledge about these events, largely due to the fact that the mayor, police and downtown business association prefer to brush it under the rug.........we don't want to scare away the tourists do we now?
So Mr. Joe Salerno and Mr. Peatman, I am an uninvolved citizen of Napa outraged by this event. I put up $1000 of my money to add to the reward yet I don't see anybody else stepping up to the plate. Shame on you.
As a tax paying citizen I demand that our chief of police be more visible and communicative regarding the efforts to capture this lunitic and stem this type of violence. If he can't do this, step aside and let somebody else do the job.
The mayor has proven herself to be as elusive as vice president Cheney. We have not hear one comment from her.
Until then, I pray that nobody else in our community falls victim to such violence "

OK,
Male, Female?
White, Hispanic, Black, Oriental?
Hair color?
Hair length?
Cmon NPD, Assailant description is basic police academy instruction!
Or, Do they know something they do not want to tell us? "

and how much exposure have you had to napa gangs? or is your exposure limited to what you see on t.v.? i have personally worked with gang-members in town and have worked with youth in town trying to keep them out of gangs. i am in no way supporting gang activity when i say this:
i have said it in previous posts on this article and i will say it again: this does NOT sound like a gang initiation if you know how gangs in napa work! why do you think that GTF is not really involving themselves with this one that much? why do you think that NPD issued a statement specifically stating that there is no reason to believe that it was gang-related and that they are working with the county mental health department? why do you think NPD specifically stated that there is every reason to believe it could be a mentally disturbed person as well? gang initiations do not work this way in town. they would not stab a 71-year old man in broad daylight downtown. it really doesn't fit! so will you and mr. peatman and everyone else PLEASE open your minds to the fact that it could and probably was something other than gang-related? will you PLEASE stop scape-goating gangs for every thing that goes wrong in our community? there are just as many crimes in napa that are committed by non gang-related people, if not more. the more you scape-goat gangs, the more those crimes go unpunished and unsolved. is that really justice? no. so until you know the facts of the case, please open your mind to other possibilities and in the future, please refrain from speaking on that which you do not know. The NPD won't implicate gang activity because that would upset merchants during a very touchy economy, when this last quarter usually means the difference between profit and loss for the entire year...
That said, I'd bet the NPD holds off on any mention of gang members related to this stabbing until after the holiday shopping season...
Just follow the money... The merchant's 'gang' is a powerful bunch... "
