At long last, election time is done
Barack Obama looked a little tired in his first press conference since Election Day. The president-elect is not the only one.
After a nearly two-year presidential campaign, many voters are exhausted, too.
Here in Napa County, several other tough races have come to a close, even as candidates for seats on the St. Helena and Calistoga city councils still await a final tally.
With the election finally behind us, it is time for the candidates, their supporters and the members of the voting public to lay down their swords and work together for the public good.
On the national front, we have much work to do on matters from the wars in the Middle East to the sputtering economy. President-elect Obama’s observations this week, that we must put aside partisan politics to find solutions that work no matter who they come from, send the appropriate message.
The same is true here in our home county. Several critical matters await our local and regional representatives.
For the first time in his 12 years in office, Rep. Mike Thompson finds himself in a Washington where Democrats control both houses of Congress and the White House. We hope and expect that Thompson will continue to fight for fiscal restraint on the part of the debt-laden federal government while advocating vigorously for his constituents at home.
Re-elected Assemblywoman Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa, is about to take on perhaps the most thankless job in California. She will be chair of the Assembly Budget Committee in a budget crisis, and one in which many termed-out legislators may not want to do the hard work of fixing the state’s serious financial problems.
Keith Caldwell joins the Napa County Board of Supervisors just as two major projects, the Napa Pipe proposal and Angwin eco-village, enter critical political phases.
Municipal leaders from American Canyon to Calistoga must address residents’ concerns for safety and smart planning during what promises to be a difficult financial time.
So as we take down our political signs, let’s put away the political arguments that shaped the election and start the process by which we work together to make our nation and our county a better, safer, stronger place.

Tell that to the pro homosexual marriage crowd. They don't seem to have any intention of "laying down their swords" or "working together" since they lost at the election.
And you know what? I can respect that attitude. In my America, you don't give up. You keep fighting for what you believe in, no matter what.
Far too often, the media's condesending message of surrender is only directed to Republican's. As has been said many times by many people the last 8 years: "criticism of the government is patriotic".
Well, I am going to be a HUGE patriot over the next four years! "

I am glad to hear you are discovering that criticism of the president during wartime is patriotic even though you bewailed it constantly for a LONG LONG TIME.
Only the positions have changed, your guys are 'OUT' and Democrats are 'IN'.
I do hope that your criticisms of the new government are more fact-based than your attacks on the candidates.
And, kevin, buddy... please be prepared for your criticisms to be criticized!
Gonna happen, you betcha!

There are a lot of people out there in for a rude awakening finding out they are considered "wealthy" while this administration "spreads the wealth".
You may be seeing the beginnings of a US default. "

Anyway, one interesting result of Obama's election is the boom in gun sales....and here the IRA and gun dealers thought they would be out of luck if he were elected. I'm not letting myself worry too much, though, that all those fearful hunters and militia wannabees are armed to the teeth with assault weapons. They will soon learn that Obama's plan all along has been to honor sportsmen and protect the second amendment. At that point, maybe they can put all those guns in a locked cabinet, unloaded, where they belong.
I'm so glad it's over, and relieved, and thrilled that Obama has been given a chance to disprove the rampant mischaracterizations and to show what intelligence combined with good character can accomplish. And I was also relieved to hear McCain lay the foundation for a spirit of cooperation and peaceable acceptance of the new administration, duly elected. "

Now that was funny, what it should read is ....
