Rex and Ruby have recovered from their brush with death after eating snail bait.
Rex, Napa police officer Ryan Cole’s K-9 partner, along with Cole’s pet German shepherd Ruby, were rushed to California Pet Hospital on Monday.
The dogs had their stomachs pumped to rid the poison from their systems.
“The dogs are back to normal and have been released to their owner,” veterinarian Randy Lung said this morning.
It was touch and go for Ruby on Monday, Lung said. “We were confident from the start that Rex was going to make it. He didn’t ingest as much of the snail bait as Ruby.”
Cole’s other pet German shepherd, Lily, died from the poison.
Police believe the dogs were intentionally poisoned when someone tossed a box of snail bait over a fence into the backyard of Cole’s home in north Napa.
Cole’s wife found the three dogs in different stages of seizures in the backyard.
Lung said once the poison is completely out of the dogs’ system, they will fully recover and should not have any lasting effects.
“Some dogs go temporarily blind for 24 hours because of the seizures,” he said.
This is the second snail bait poisoning of dogs in Napa within a week.
Last Wednesday, Sheri Smith found her three dogs dead from eating snail bait, which she said was thrown into the backyard of her Browns Valley home.
The police department has posted a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for poisoning the dogs.
Friends of Smith have also put up a $500 reward.
So far, investigators do not have any suspects, Napa Police Sgt. Debbie Peecook said.
Peecook said the culprits face misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and attempting to injure or kill a police dog.
If convicted, they could face up to a year in the county jail.
Anyone wishing to donate to the reward may call Napa Police Cmdr. Steve Potter at 258-7882.

If this is the home of the K9 I think it is, I know that the office regularly has his K9 cruiser in his front yard in the driveway. For your everyday bad guy, this is dangerous for the officer to show where he lives. At least in my point of view. "

We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the citizens of Napa. Your kind words, comforting thoughts and prayers are appreciated more than you could ever know. We have suffered a great tragedy in the loss of our puppy Lilly, and we thank God that Ruby and Rex survived.
Our children are devastated by all of this, and have many questions as to why someone would want to hurt their dogs. I cannot express how hard it was to try and explain to our young children the malice and cruel act enflicted on our family. It has been a very sad two days in our house, not having the bouncing around of an energetic puppy, nor the company of our two other dogs. Now that Ruby and Rex are home, the kids are doing better, but nothing will ever fill the void of their beloved " Lilly."
To Dr. Lung and his staff...thank you is not nearly adequate enough to express our appreciation for what you did for Ruby and Rex. Letting us be with them during treatment, and the loving way you supported and comforted us during this tragedy goes beyond expectation.
To the NPD...thank you for your concern and support. We know you are working hard to find the person(s) that did this to our dogs and those of Ms. Smith so they can be brought to justice.
To our family and friends...without your outpouring of love and affection we would not be able to get through this.
Thank you again Napa. We appreciate all you are doing to support our family.
Lisa and Ryan Cole "

I hope the law allows for consecutive sentences for each offense on each animal. That could be up to four years - three with time off.
I will be sending a donation of $200. And I urge everyone to keep watch on their neighborhoods. If you see something suspicious get a license plate number, make and model of the car or if a person is on foot a description of the clothing. Then call the police and let them check it out.
jwk is right. This goes way beyond vandalism. Let's find this creep and ask our D.A. to seek the maximum sentence. No plea bargain on this one. "

It should be one year in jail for each incident, so far 6 dogs = 6 years. And there should definitely be special enhancements when crimes are committed against police dogs.
This person is one sick individual... Im with project 707, I'd love to donate my fists as well. "
