The Register should have endorsed Obama

As a businessman, registered Republican, and retired military officer, I might be expected to agree with the Register’s endorsement of Sen. McCain for president.

Nothing is further from the truth.
Apparently driven by big-business self-interest, an overriding concern for the status quo, and an uncritical endorsement of one of the most corrupt, ineffectual and misanthropic administrations ever to occupy the White House, the Register failed to make a cogent argument for McCain’s election.

The Register should revisit its endorsement in light of the following issues facing the nation, many of which have been ignored — or exacerbated by — the current administration’s foolhardy endorsement of unthinking economic deregulation, unjustified foreign intervention, unilateral diplomatic isolationism, unconscionable torture of prisoners and other human rights abuses, unthinking disregard of scientific progress, unpardonable campaign of disinformation and abandonment of any vestige of moral integrity.
Consider, for example McCain’s stance on:

National Security: A wholesale endorsement of the invasion of Iraq, based on lies and manipulated intelligence resulting in more than 34,000 military casualties, including more than 4,000 dead, the waste of $600 billion, and distraction from dealing with al-Qaeda and Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Economic Strength: A continuation of the policy of “trusting people instead of government,” a thinly veiled euphemism for more-of-the-same deregulation and the discredited trickle-down economics of the past. In this regard, continuing unconscionable tax cuts for the wealthiest 5 percent in the U.S. will not address the issues of increasing wage disparity, an eroding middle-class and economic piracy of big-business, not to mention a ballooning $500 billion-per-year federal budget deficit.

Energy Independence: Despite considerable information indicating “drill, baby, drill” will have little impact, near-term or otherwise, on energy independence, McCain continues to espouse this simplistic energy policy as if it alone could solve such a critical problem.

Education: McCain’s policy to “leave the responsibility for (education) decisions in the hands of families” is an undisguised abandonment of the public school system, long acknowledged to be the bedrock of a stable society, competitive workforce and informed nation.

Healthcare Reform: As the U.S. continues to suffer an inability to obtain reasonable medical insurance, resulting in 45 million uninsured individuals, and a doubling of healthcare expenses in the past five years to more than $2 trillion per year, the Register’s comment that McCain proposes a “more realistic, less burdensome… more fiscally responsible” solution to the health-care crisis can only be interpreted as endorsing the increasingly fragile medical health care system in the US.

Social Security Revitalization: McCain continues to endorse a policy of privatization with personal retirement accounts, a policy with dire consequences that in light of recent Wall Street events. Indeed, McCain not only proposes “no tax increase of any kind” but proposes lowering taxes on investment and business income while still promising — without providing specifics — to “not hand off a broken Social Security system” to future generations.

By comparison, Sen. Obama proposes:

National Security: A reasoned approach involving dialogue, diplomatic negotiation and economic sanctions that reserves — but does not abrogate — the use of military force.

Economic Strength: Market reforms and creation of a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank to help reverse the decay of roads, bridges and mass-transit systems.

Energy Independence: Tax credits for fuel-efficient vehicles, reduction in electrical consumption, cap-and-trade program to reduce carbon emissions, incentives to make the auto industry more competitive and doubling the use of renewable sources of energy.

Education: Increased emphasis on Head Start/Early Head Start, recruitment of and increased pay for a new generation of teachers, repair of the No Child Left Behind program, full funding of English Language Learners and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and creation of an American Opportunity Tax Credit for college education.

Healthcare Reform: Reform of Medicare/Medicaid (negotiated prescription drug prices, imported prescription drugs and investing in improved medical information technology), mandated health care coverage for all children, a new national public health plan and National Health Insurance Exchange with the $60 billion annual cost financed by canceling the 2001 tax cuts for those earning over $200,000 a year.

Social Security Revitalization: Imposition of payroll tax on incomes over $250,000 a year while eliminating taxes on those over 65 earning less than $50,000 a year.

However, the Register’s most egregious and disingenuous reason for endorsing Sen. McCain is contained in the comment that we “cannot afford to project hope on one so unproven.”  Without belaboring the success of such “unproven” presidents as Lincoln, Truman and Kennedy, one need only look at McCain’s vice-presidential choice to see through the Register’s concern with unproven potential presidents.

We expect better from the editorial board of the Napa Valley’s major newspaper.

Hopefully we can expect better from the voters of Napa Valley.

And the voters of the nation.

" Evidently, the dunderheads at the Napa Register's amusingly named "editorial board" are completely out of touch with their own readership. And, if you watch the video they supplied, they have better things to do that listen to mere customers.

" Amen.
The Register is entitled to their own opinion under the 1st amendment. That opinion however is incorrect. "

Time to stop complaining about the opinions of others, they have a right to see it differently. Your wasting your time and it makes us look bad. "

" Finally, a reasonable account of both sides on the issues, not accusations and falsities.

Skip -- very well written article -- bravo! I too was disappointed in my hometown paper... but I dont' think it representative of the papers across the U.S.... we shall see on Tuesday night what the nation wants. "

" Sorry Skip...........you may say you're a Republican but you ACT like a Democrat. You completely ignore the fact(s) that Obama has more skeletons in his closet then a haunted house. This is a completely bias account of who Obama REALLY IS. Selective liberalism, just like a Democrat. "

" McCain's has plenty of skeletons as well however, the corporate media tip toes around him at the risk of coming off as not deferential enough to an American "Hero". There is so much out there on McCain that is not reported in the mainstream because of the fear of how it will come off. His voting record on veterans issues is just one area where he pretends to be something he is not. He DOES not support veterans issues. He is a liar and a phony and the media is complicit in this. He opposed the new GI bill and yet, Bush gave him credit when it passed. B.S! "

" Skip, I can rebut each one of your points, but for the sake of brevity, I'll limit myself to a couple.

National Security: The fact is that the invasion of Iraq was approved by a very large majority of lawmakers, including Democrats. Obama was one of the few who did not, but it should be pointed out that he was not yet in Congress, thus was not briefed on the secret intelligence available at that time.

Energy Independence: The fact that drilling for oil now may not produce results until 10 years from now should not be a reason to minimize drilling, as Obama has advocated. We are in this for the long haul, not just short term gains.

Obama promises pie in the sky by and by, but he won't be able to deliver on his glibly made promises. "

" J.R.: National security based on a lie is not fact or a basis for security no matter how many weak minded law makers were persuaded. Drilling now or in the past or future will not address our energy problems especially if the continued failure of past policy prevails. "

" Skip seems to think it’s a good idea to elect a President with even less business competence then a self employed real estate agent.…someone without any job experience outside government funded positions….someone who has benefited immensely, indeed recently becoming a millionaire merely by promising to take from others what he is personally unwilling to give himself….someone who became a millionaire without providing jobs, products, services or a meaningful contribution ’his’ community….someone who naively claims the solution to dealing with fanatical Islamists is to rationalize with them….um…we tried that from 1992-2000.

Those who have studied Religious History, Middle East History, Medieval History, Political Science, World History or just well read on history period, evidently not taught in Indonesian Muslim schools or Harvard Law School, would know the impractically of attempting to reason with a 7th century irrational ideology…..

One thing strikingly obvious in Skip’s opinions…..is a complete lack of what 80% of actual Business Owners are up against with an Obama Administration…but Skip benefits personally and professionally parading as a Republican endorsing Obama because Napa is becoming like so many dysfunctional communities around the Bay Area dominated by Professional ineptness…and the common denominator here is their party affiliation…not Republican.

This is the fractured logic that has caused the Republican Party to stray from it’s core values of individual responsibility replaced with…..going along to get along…..it’s all words without meanings.

" The Register should remain fair and unbiased......by supporting one candidate or the other the Register is not giving their readers ALL the important information to make an informed decision when they go to vote......make it fair, equal and unbiased then let the intelligent people of the valley make up their own minds, we don't need the Register telling us how to vote.....

This is one thing that has been wrong for far too long in this country.......newspapers need to remain more neutral in their reporting.....otherwise it's not news, it's commentary at best.... "

" Glenroy...it's kind of amusing...your defining what a "Real" millionaire should be or how they should make their money. I guess all of the rich who bacame wealthy by inheriting their parent's or grandparents money, their parent's businesses or who made it through investment in the stock market or who watched their property values skyrocket, aren't valid. Wow...that diminishes quite a lot of people. Oh...I guess they did give their financial advisors jobs. "

" I wish Skippy would explain just why he is registered as a Republican in the first place.

If he doesn't believe in lower taxes, personal responsibility and a strong national defense, he is in the wrong party.

B.O. has promised to cut the military and his cohort Barney Frank in Congress is preparing for 25% cuts. Joe Biden has "promised" a "crisis" will hit America in the form of a test because of B.O.'s inexperience.

B.O.'s tax increases will hurt the economy. Regardless of whether the limits $300K, $250K, $200K or $150K, B.O. doesn't plan to extend President Bush's tax cuts past 2010, so we all end up with a tax INCREASE. "

" Kevin gets it....

I wouldn’t call Skip a small ‘Business Owner’ per se….it has nothing to do with ripping his profession….self employed doesn‘t automatically equate to business ownership and certainly doesn‘t require near the skills needed to manage any number of small businesses. On a management skills scale it doesn’t get any easier than professional self employed.

The bigger picture is why call yourself a Republican and endorse the most anti-Republican Democrat ever to be nominated? The party principles are less government, greater individual freedoms and accountability for you actions…‘don‘t blame Mexicans for your job loss get another job‘….and most of all… live and let live…. you mind your business and I‘ll mind mine.

Obama has no chance of uniting this nation….none….his alliance with Pelosi, Reid and Frank will ultimately split the Democrat Party beside ruining thousands of businesses, assuming he wins and I have doubts his popularity is anywhere near being reported…. "

glenroy wrote on Nov 2, 2008 5:25 PM:

" Misfit….it is my opinion those who obtain extraordinary wealth while ‘serving the public’ are pretty much phony millionaires…. So when I referred to ‘real millionaires’ I refer to those who are self made not a Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Kennedy…and certainly not Obama though they are millionaires by definition.

The other side of the coin would be Mike Thompson…much of what he supports I oppose…but I admire his service and the fact that he has not amassed wealth at our expense, at least not as far as I know…. "

" The Register can endorse any candidate it chooses. Lefties always try to shut up any opposing voices. Yeah, the 'party of inclusion' is the most divisive force in America today.

And then we have Bill, trying to apologize for the Dems who voted for the Iraq war. If the Dems in Congress didn't ask any questions, but just voted for whatever they were told to vote for, then they should all be thrown out of office for stupidity and incompetence. "

And for BO's energy plan it has already worked. Proper inflation of everyone's tires has lowered gas prices again and it only took a couple of months. "
