7:30 p.m.The Napa Downtown Merchants Association has put up a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who stabbed an elderly man in front of a downtown restaurant Tuesday night.

The 71-year-old Napa man suffered four stab wounds. He was treated that night at Queen of the Valley Medical Center and released.
The victim and his wife had just finished dinner at Downtown Joe’s. He was standing on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant when a young man approached and stabbed him once in the chest, twice in the abdomen and once in the back.

Police say they do not know of a motive, and at this time believe the attack was random.
The victim told investigators he had not been involved in any altercations prior to the stabbing, police said.

The assailant ran off headed north on Main Street.
“This is a bizarre random attack. We have never had any other unprovoked assaults like this downtown that I can recall,” Napa Police Cmdr. Andy Lewis said. “We are still trying to put all of the pieces together.

“But this should not discourage people from going downtown and patronizing our local businesses,” he said.

The assailant is described as between 16 and 20 years old, clean shaven, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9, about 130 pounds, wearing a white, long-sleeve T-shirt, blue baggy jeans and a white baseball cap worn backwards.

Anyone with information is asked to call Napa Police Det. Don Winegar at 258-7879.

Seems I can recall another "random attack" just a few blocks from there last year or so........and I do believe that man died from his stab wounds. This gentleman was lucky.......for as lucky as you can be when you are attacked and stabbed. What a horrible thing to have happen.
I hope he is doing well. "

" I appreciate the update, but I still don't know who to look out for. White, black, Hispanic, Asian, whatever. And what color is his hair? How long? So I'll be looking for a short, young, skinny guy. That helps. "

" It happened a few months ago.. Dan Ross can refresh our memories.. I think it was around the same area.
But the person who was stabbed was a youngish man. "

" Was this man that was stabbed a local or a tourist?

Why not tell the man's name and more detailed description of the person who stabbed him. A reward for who?
The man that got stabbed must of seen him pretty good, couldn't they do a drawing for the public? "

" That attack was a shooting and the man survived. It wasn't reported as being random as it was said that there was an altercation in the parking lot between the victim and the perpetrator.
The main point, however is that we have more and more sociopathic people here who don't care who they hurt or kill if they are "disrespected". The current attack seems to be random, which is what makes it so scary. "

" Jersey guy...yes there was a shooting not long ago at the Mervyns parking lot......and there was another stabbing...at Main and Pearl...they found the man leaning against a pole....and yes he died. I am sick and tired of Napa pretending that each and every attack is the "first" random attack. It wouldn't look good I guess to tell the whole truth......might scare the tourists. But seriously....tourists still go to LA and New York...Paris etc... where there is crime and murder. I wonder why Napa tells white lies? "

" napanana: there was nothing reported to state that the stabbing at Main and Pearl was random. Unless you have some personal knowledge of the case, don't assume the facts. "

" wow blammo.......gald to know you are an expert on the crime in Napa.......If you will recall......the case is still unsloved. I guess it is alright that the man died because you said it wasn't a "random attack". It does sound as tho YOU have knowledge of the attack....give the details to the cops. "

" This is a horrible accident for any civilian. I hope that the community can work together to bring who ever is responsible for this vicious attack to justice. The ideal situation would be for this individual to turn themselves in. "

" This is sad news and the bad part is it's going to get worse before it gets better. It would have help if we the people had better info on the suspect. "

" What possible reason could there be for not giving a better description of the assailant? Let me see, why on earth wouldn't they give a clearer indication of what this guy looked like so the folks could help bring him to justice?

Wow, you don't suppose? Naah, couldn't be. People in our community would never put political correctness over the safety of the citizens. Right? "
