10 a.m.SANTA ROSA — A Napa man and two Santa Rosa men have admitted their involvement in a scheme to sell high-end wine stolen from a wine company.

Just before their preliminary hearing was about to begin Wednesday, Kevin Hall, Jordan Cross and Jarrett Berg admitted to their roles in trying to sell wines stolen from a Jackson Family Wines distribution center.
Investigators say the three sold nearly 1,000 bottles of Bordeaux-style red wine costing as much as $175 each.

The 30-year-old Cross has been identified by prosecutors as the ringleader. His attorney says he agreed to plead guilty after the judge indicated he would not sentence him to state prison.
The 30-year-old Hall will be sentenced to five months in jail, while the 29-year-old Berg will serve three months in jail.

" Let's see $175 X 1,000=$175,000 and they get 5 and 3 months! Seems like a pretty light sentence to me. Did they have to make restitution and or pay a fine? "

" If you only get 6mos' for a sex offense in this county- what makes you think wine thieves would get more time? "

" The "ringleader" gets no state prison time while his accomplices get a total of 8 months? Where is the justice in that? "

" Grand Theft (or is it Larceny). They only get an average of four months?

Good Game "

" To Raybo,
It says the ringleader isn't getting prison time, but it doesn't say what his sentence is. He will probably get more than 8 months in county jail or a minimum security prison, but he won't be in San quentin or any other state prison. Hes not walking away from this, he's getting more time than the other two, hopefully the register updates this article. "

" Get real. This is not about selling dope, and these defendants are probably white. And just WHO purchaced the wine? Not exactly skid row bums looking for a good deal on something better than Thunderbird. Wine does appreciate in value, so the theft dollar amount is really misrepresented here. Does the prosecution really want to investigate who profits from these crimes? "

" Humm...well grand larceny only gets you an average of 4 months time in the slammer. What if it were WPM's? I suppose one could possible expect a pardon? "

Yep, even the wine thieves in Napa are snooty... Anything to do with wine gets you an get out of jail free card....

Any more questions...??? "

" Do you guys just whine about every single article that is printed in this paper? Get over it. Would you sleep better at night if you knew these guys were serving prison time for this stupid crime? How does this affect you in any way? Exactly, it doesn't. I know one of these guys personally and he made a stupid mistake. He is not a bad guy in the slightest and doesn't deserve prison time. And I'm not one of those people that tries to claim these murderers are good guys too. "

" Sorry, napasfinest, they may not be a terrible person but you do the crime you do the time. He knew darn well what he was doing and the repercusions if caught. I don't feel sorry for him. "

" I have to say that the sentences do seem light but when you take into account the severe overcrowding of our state prisons it's probably for the best. These guys don't seem to have priors, or atleast they weren't mentioned if they did, and I would personally rather see them get jail than to have a convicted sex offender, etc., get let out early just to have space for them at a prison. We need to start being more discriminating about who we send into the prison system, i.e., violent criminals, sex offenders, etc. "

" mafi-

Several of you keep referring to this case as if it happened in Napa. It appears from where this article originated from, that this happened in Santa Rosa. That means these three have been sentenced from the Sonoma Courts, not the Napa Courts. "

No kidding.

I'll bet you lunch that he thinks his only mistake was getting caught. This wasn't an accident, he didn't trip over a log.

"He is not a bad guy in the slightest and doesn't deserve prison time."

He's a thief. He stole. He got together with a couple of pals and conspired to steal $200 large from another group of people.

This wasn't a business mistake. It wasn't a well-meaning error. It wasn't an oversight: he got together with some other guys and they created plans, assertively and actively, to take somebody else's property.

That makes him a crook.

A bad guy.

Not to say that there is no redemption.
But yeah: this thing didn't just sort of "happen".

He --they all-- did Crime. They knew that.

" All this jail sentence does is show people that crime does payoff. You steal $175,000 worth of wine and when caught, you only receive a slap on the wrist for it. How sad! "
