Oreo Cows wander on to Highway 29

About eight of Napa's Oreo Cows wandered on to Highway 29 this afternoon, near Highway 121, momentarily tying up traffic.

The cows, known in other parts as Belted Galloways and Dutch Belted, are black at both ends, with a wide white stripe in the middle. The cows are part of a farm adjacent to the highway.
CHP had all lanes of the higway closed at about 3:45 p.m. while the owners of the cows were contacted to round up the cows.

Every day, passersby stop to stare at the unusual cattle at Stewart Ranch in Napa.
The ranch, owned by Ailene Pritchett and her husband Jim McGlothern, is nestled in the western hills on the south side of town, and is home to two the rare bovine breeds -- Belted Galloways and Dutch Belted cattle.

Pritchett's animals are not just the subject of local buzz. The ranch was featured on "Good Morning America" about four years ago.

" We sent a photogragher out as soon as we heard, but they were gone.
Does anyone have photos of the cows on the highway?
If so, e-mail them to bkennedy@napanews.com and we will try to get them published on the site. "

" I'm sure at the time the cows were on the highway, and traffic was at a stand-still, the situation was stressful for the drivers, cattle owners, and the cows. But now, after the fact, what a funny story! It is great to have this light-hearted story in The Register! "

" That was just me and a few friends riding the Oreo cows to work. Cheaper than gas. "

" Oh my gosh! Now that's a local story I can sink my teeth into ! Who cares about the awful economy, let's focus on the cows! I love cows... I raised cattle as a teen, and once my steer I was raising for fair broke out and we spent all day looking for him. I think he knew his days were numbered. "
