Election coverage

Below are the local endorsements to date from the Napa Valley Register editorial board for the Nov. 4 General Election.

Measure P (Ag preservation) — Yes. While neighboring Bay Area counties have lost thousands of acres of agricultural land to urban growth in the last 15 years, Napa County has lost very little. Meanwhile, the local economy has thrived, and cities — with the exception of American Canyon — have grown slowly if at all. (Read more)

Supervisor District 2 — Mark Luce. Two familiar figures are rivals to represent District 2 on the Napa County Board of Supervisors: Mark Luce and Harry Martin. In our view, incumbent Luce is clearly the candidate who can better serve the people of the county. (Read more)

Supervisor District 5 — TBA

Napa City Council — Jim Krider, Mark van Gorder. Three people are running for two seats on Napa City Council. They are incumbents Jim Krider and Mark van Gorder and first-time candidate Amber Martin. In our view, the best candidates clearly are Krider and van Gorder. (Read more)

American Canyon City Council — TBA

American Canyon Mayor — TBA

Napa Valley Unified School District — Simone Moultak. Here in the southern part of Napa County, voters — and especially parents — should tune into a contested race for a seat on the board of the Napa Valley Unified School District board. Michael Douglas is leaving the board, and two American Canyon parents are vying to replace him in NVUSD District 4: Simone Moultak and Joe Schunk. (Read more)

Calistoga City Council — Michael Dunsford, Karen Slusser. They made progress, although it was slower than Calistogans had hoped. They showed clear heads and steady hands, although occasionally they lacked innovation. They spoke their minds, but they didn’t get bogged down in petty personal distractions. (Read more)

Calistoga Mayor — Jack Gingles. Both Mayor Jack Gingles and his main challenger, former city fire chief and current Councilmember Gary Kraus, have contributed much to city government in the last two years.(Read more)

Calistoga School Board — TBA

St. Helena City Council — Catarina Sanchez , Sharon Crull. St. Helena voters have a unique opportunity on Nov. 4 to elect two intelligent problem-solvers to the city council. (Read more)

" They already endorsed Simpson in the primary, and just like Luce they should endorse him again. They endorsed him before all this degree stuff came to light, so why would they change their mind now? "

Didn't you hear, that is exactly what they did when Keith's signs were hanging at Fairview Market. What else would they do to win!!! "

" Putting politcal signs for a local election on or in a commercial retail establishement is a surefire method to alienate paying customers. Notice any candidate signs at Safeway? Fairview made the appropriate decision. A non-profit did not, and Mr. Caldwell's signs compromised credibility. A small leak will eventually cause a flat tire. Knowingly putting a leaky tire on a car is really taking a chance. "

" Gary Simpson paid to have a firm call me, "the man of the house", to find out how I was voting. I am trying to figure out why they didn't start telling me how bad Keith Caldwell is. The only thing I can imagine was when they asked me my political orientation and I told them very liberal and said I was voting for Keith no matter what.

I am trying to figure out why Gary Simpson is spending so much money for a seat in a very small county. "

" "Man of the house?" Whoa! what type of right winged, extremist conservative firm did Simpson select? Get used to it because if Simpson is elected, you will be dealing with this type of stuff regularly. We need balance, not political extremism.

I don't trust any endorsement that NVR makes anymore after they endorsed McCain. They endorsed Bush for two terms as well. How can they be taken seriously?

And regarding Bauhausfan's question about Simpson spending so much money for a seat in a small county; someone else is buying that seat. They know that Simpson will be a more responsive puppet than Caldwell. "

" NAPAFOREVER and NAPATOWN, The familyn that runs Fairview Market don't own the property. The property owner supports Simpson and that is why the signs were changed. Go in and ask like I did and you will get the truth.BAUHAUSFAN, all the legitamate candidates take polls because widespread community support results in donations that give real candidates enough money to pay for polls. Caldwell does not have enough support and donations to take a poll. He does have enough money to put out a mailer with quotes from former candidate jager's campaign making it look like jager supports Caldwell. Jager supports Simpson and the mailer is just a dirty trick to try and capture the 25% of the votes jager recieved in the primary. This is an act of desperation by the Caldqwell campaign because they know if the votes Jager got go to Simpson its game over for Caldwell. But they used their usual unethical mind set to try and get these votes. Please Vote for Simpson the only honest candidate. "

" Vocal...We don't need people from Angwin butting into our affairs in District 5. Your supervisor Diane Dillon has endorsed Simpson. Follow her lead . You might also look at Simpsons web site and see his other endorsements none of whom are "right wing extremists". Is Brad Wagonknect a right wing extremist? No. Simpson is bought by no one. Look at Caldwells endorsements like Laurie Puzo who works for Noreen Evans who supports 3200 homes at Napa pipe. Want to comment on that?
For those in District 5 Please vote for Simpson. "
