Register out of step

Dear editor, I was surprised to see the Register’s endorsement of John McCain. Rather than rebut your perceived strengths of McCain, I’d like to understand why a community newspaper is so out of step with the majority of the community it represents.

I called Napa’s elections office this morning to discover we have 18,424 registered Democrats, as opposed to 10,623 Republicans; 6,621 declined to state a party. As a whole, we tend to vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidates and principles.
This leads me to wonder: your endorsement doesn’t support the community. Is it independently based on the opinions of your editorial staff, or are you required to follow the endorsement of your corporate owner, Lee Enterprises, Inc., of Davenport, Iowa? I feel this is an important question considering all of our valley newspapers are owned by the same corporation.

By the way, 15 newspapers across the country endorsed Sen. Obama last weekend, while Sen. McCain was endorsed by the Napa Register and the Wheeling News Register of West Virginia, which always endorses the Republican candidate.

" As I commented before to the Register, did they check the electorial poll before they made the endorsement? Is this situation in which we find that common sense is overpowered by a false sense of reality? My hopes are the Register will print the wrong candidate for winning the election and then I can get a copy and sell it on the web. Now that is what I call spreading the wealth. McCain loses yet he wins in the Register publication the next day and I make big bucks! Spread that wealth around! "

" I'm an unabashed liberal. I don't get the "how dare the NVR endorse McCain" furor. Newspapers frequently reflect the views of their owners. It's their paper, not yours, they can endorse whom ever they please.

I'm personally grateful that I live in a country where a newspaper is free to endorse any candidate they please.

They have the right to be wrong. "

" The Register is not required to endorse a candidate based on the majority of the voters in the county, and that should make no difference in their decision making process. "

" Why yes, Brian, the NVR should pick who they think will win, as long as you agree with their choice...???

I think your attitude is what is coming if we get an Obama administration... The Fairness Doctrine will shut up all opposing view points, so we can all be ONE, with THE ONE... Wowie, won't that be just wonderful.... "

" McCain's policies are going to raise the defecit even more. He's going to ruin healthcare. And he wants to continue the international policies of George Bush. Bomb Iran anyone? We're never going to find Bin Laden. "
