It never fails that right after the first month of school ends, the hot topic becomes Halloween. How do your kids get ready for Halloween?  Do you mom's make costumes?  Or do you buy something ready made?  Which is better, and why?

" Well, I can't sew, so that leaves me with prretty much three options only: One, put together something with what we already have, or two, borrow somebody's last years costume, or three, take a ride to Wal-Mart. "

" I have made costumes when they were little. Felt and a hot glue gun work wonders to make a turtle or a dinosaur. I sewed an elephant once. These days they like to figure it out themselves. My 22 month old will be in a borrowed costume, or I will get busy and make something. There are great ideas on Family Fun's website. "

" @ LMW
But the custom Halo suit is sooo much better! I bought a pre-made Star Wars Stormtrooper costume this year and when it arrived, I had to do a TON of work on it to make it 'fit' and make it comfortable for costuming.
I really should have spent the time in the garage forming my suit, making a vacuum mold etc. The finished product would have looked a lot more custom then my 1/2 bought suit, and 1/2 customized suit.
Do the kids like their Wally World costumes? "

" My mother-in-law (aka: The QUEEN of the Sewing Machine) made costumes for my youngest daughter every year from about 3 yrs old until she was in 4th or 5th grade. They were STUPENDOUS! She always had the best costume in the playground parade. Kitty cat, little red devil, Xena the Barbarian, a couple of Disney heroines....but the best (and also the last) was the Pink Power Ranger costume complete with spats and long, white gloves that played the "Go, go Power Rangers!" theme when she struck the appropriate wrists-together pose. She looked awesome! What a labor of love that costume was! Homemade creativity will always reign supreme over mass produced store bought costumes, but, alas! I have neither the time or the skill to pull it off for MY grandchildren. "

" When I was young (15-20 years ago) my mom would make my Halloween costumes. I would LOVE them. Wish I still had them today. Even my teenage friends would ask if they could get one.
Now of days, things have change - its not cool - its stupid - they will laugh at me - thats what I get from my kids. In 2009 kids dont know how lucky they are. I barley get a Thank You after spending $100 each at the Halloween store.. "

" THe memories of homemade costumes are one of my favorites. I don't know how my mom found time to make the costumes and be a single mom going to college. Anyway, I made my sons first costume with my mom, but now I buy online. Several choices, well made and easy to pass onto other people. Anything to avoid Walmart! "

" When I was a kid (not that long ago, haha) my mom made Halloween costumes for me, my brother, and my sister. One year we were the Three Little Kittens (as in, who lost their mittens). Another year, I was the Cat in the Hat and they were Thing 1 and Thing 2.

This year I bought my costume, though. It's much easier, although very expensive! Some of the costumes were $100 and up at the Halloween store in the River Park shopping center. "
