Blazy days
Last week, it felt as though the California fire season for 2008 was well in the rear-view mirror.
Fear-mongering not what we need
America, you have a serious problem. More serious than your addiction to oil. Racism is alive and all too well.
Are we better off than we were eight years ago?
The Bush-McCain tax cuts for the rich have reduced annual tax revenue, available for public needs, by $300 billion each year.
Presidential debate and recession
Not sure I can add much to what is already on the site or out there, other than my view. McCain seems constantly angry and unpresidential. Regardless of his policies I don't see how he can win like that. Unfortunately I think we are seeing the real McCain, many from Arizona predicted he would be a bad campaigner, now I know what they mean.
Jesse Jackson's Zionist criticism
Yesterday, Jesse Jackson got some air time from saying that under an Obama administration, "Zionists" would lose influence. Pretty rich having Jackson sticking up for Israel, huh? Protecting them from an Obama administration and all.
Vote no on Proposition 9
Proposition 9 on the Nov. 4 ballot is one of three proposals to enact changes to the California criminal justice system. The law is intended to increase the voice of victims and decrease the rights of prisoners in various respects.
Trickle up, not trickle down
Dear editor, Thank you, Larry Luttrell, for your letter to the editor (“Let’s get real on the financial solution,” Sept. 30). Like you, I don’t want anyone who created the problem to decide how to repair it.
Be aware of Luce's record
Dear editor, Even though I do not live in the second district, who gets elected to the Napa County Board of Supervisors affects us all. I want to point out to the voters that in the last election, Mark Luce supported Proposition 98. That was the initiative authored by the apartment owners, landlords and mobile home park owners, in which they tried to sneak in language that would have made rent control unconstitutional. It was opposed by the League of California Cities, including every city in Napa County. It was soundly defeated. I think that illustrates that Mr. Luce either is not familiar with, or is not concerned with, the plight of the working man in Napa County.
Changes we don't need
Dear editor, Do we really know what Barack Obama’s “Change we need” will mean to this country and each of us? Here are just a few of his plans, according to Citizens Against Government Waste:
Bring BART up to Napa
Dear editor, I read an article about the traffic on Highway 29 and concerns about developing a plan to deal with our current and present increase of it. The solution appears to be clear to me. Bring BART up to the Napa airport and/or establish a Napa bus that commutes directly to El Cerrito BART.
Give visitor's center back to merchants, members
Dear editor, In 1994 the Napa Valley Conference and Visitors Bureau, under my four years of professional Tourism Marketing leadership, had grown to 300 members, 70 volunteers and five paid staff with a $1 million-funded budget. It serviced more than 250,000 travelers through the downtown center. The bureau’s office at the Town Center had been constructed for “free” after negotiating with the developers to attract more visitors to the downtown Napa merchants and the Town Center.
Where's the love for 20-somethings?
Dear editor, I’ve been a regular reader of the Napa Valley Register for most of my life. As a child I enjoyed the puzzles and word searches in Kid Scoop. In high school I looked forward to reading the sports pages to see how my fellow student-athletes were doing. Now that I’m a 20-something, there isn’t much in the Register that addresses my generation specifically. I still keep up with the local athletic phenoms, in addition to Napa Valley politics and news, but something has been missing.
Partisan politics in Palin criticism
Dear editor, The Oct. 1 Your Turn, “Palin’s a poor choice for the presidential ticket,” by Georgiann Kite, demands comment. Much of the commentary is the usual partisan banter, including the factual misstatements. The part that is particularly irksome are the comments concerning Ms. Palin and her decision to have her latest son.
Concerned about Triad plans
Dear editor, I just wanted to let you know my concerns for the proposed Angwin development. I do not support the new proposal set forth by Triad Development. What goes on in Angwin will affect all those living in Napa Valley with increased traffic and increased strain on existing resources. We need to thoroughly address the many concerns of Angwin residents, in addition to those living in communities adjacent to Angwin, before this development goes forward.
Halloween Costumes
It never fails that right after the first month of school ends, the hot topic becomes Halloween. How do your kids get ready for Halloween? Do you mom's make costumes? Or do you buy something ready made? Which is better, and why?
Homework
Every afternoon, starting at about 3:30, I feel like I am the one going back to school. One child needs help with an algebra problem. Another has social studies questions to answer. A high school student has a paper that needs proofing. How do you mom's find the time to help your kids with homework? How much time do your kids — and you -- spend on homework each night? Who helps your kids with their homework?
Do you support Evans or Gentry for State Assembly?
Who is your choice for U.S. House; Thompson, Starkewolf or Wolman?
Is it Luce or Martin for County Supervisor, Dist. 2?
Should it be Fire Chief Caldwell or Sheriff Simpson for Dist. 5 County Supervisor?
Who is your choice for parks and open space district, ward 3?
Who should be mayor in American Canyon, Garcia or Curry?
Who should serve on American Canyon's City Council? (pick two)
Who are your Calistoga City Council choices?
Who should be St. Helena's next mayor?
Who are your Yountville Town Council choices?
Who do you support for President in the November election?
Who should be Calistoga's next mayor?
Who is your choice for Napa City Council?
Who are your Calistoga school board choices?
Who is your choice for Napa school board, Area 4?
Who are your choices for St. Helena City Council?
Obama's VP, what do you think?
Barack Obama chose Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate ... what do you think of the choice?
McCain's VP, what do you think?
(Editor's note: The comments on this crashed about 9:30 a.m Friday, right after McCain's announcement. We were able to rebuild most but not all of the comments)
Write your job description for president
We are in the process of electing a new President of the United States. Those active in the political process have their opinions on John McCain and Barack Obama, but what about taking a bit of a different spin this time around.
